We thoroughly enjoyed visiting this 13th century (or thereabouts) well preserved and interesting castle. The town of Vianden and surrounding sites are well worth a three day holiday. Very pleasent with many photo ops.

The chateau is set on a promontory in the middle of the small attractive town of Vianden commanding a significant position over the town and the River Our. It all looked very dramatic.
The best way to access it is via a chairlift which takes you to the Telesiege viewpoint above the chateau which offers wonderful views before a short but steep walk back down to the castle.
The self guided tour accompanied by an English guide book was informative. There was an Arms Hall and a Crypt with findings from excavations. There was a two storey chapel where the rich congregated above and the village folk could access below without actually entering the rest of the castle. The circular walk passed through the Byzantine Gallery and Banqueting Hall to the bedrooms which were furnished. The Festivity Hall had impressive tapestries with scenes from Homer's Iliad and Odyssey. The ramparts offered more good views. We thoroughly enjoyed the visit and loved the feel of the town of Vianden.

Traveling to Vianden, you are driving up a hill and come around a corner to see the breathtaking site of the castle on a hill. Just like in a fairy tale. It is an old castle from the 1100's or earlier that was rebuilt many times until falling into total disrepair. Finally, a benefactor saw it's possiblities and it is one of the most popular tourist destination in Luxembourg. Once you park your vehicle, you must climb up the cobblestone driveway to the entrance. Most can handle, but something to consider if you have elderly family with you. Once in, you walk through the castle, some parts are enclosed, others open to the elements so dress warmly if you are going in the winter months. There is a informative display of the how the castle would have looked over the years since it was first a fortress. I found this fascinating! Most of the castle is sparsely decorated , but you still get a good feel for how people would have lived in that time frame. The views from all the windows offer spectacular scenery and great photo ops! Don't miss the actual village of Vianden which is truly charming. Drive down the hill and bear left. On the left you can take a ski chair up the side of the mountain and this offers magnificent views in good weather! You will also get your picture taken just before you disembark so smile for the camera! There is a small restaurant at the top or you can turn around and come right back down. There are many great little restaurants and shops to visit and more opportunities for photos. A truly charming place to visit!

I visited Chateau de Vianden during my last day in Luxembourg. It is an easy day-trip from Luxembourg City.

The Chateau/Castle can be accessed from the road proper or, more interestingly, from a chairlift on the other side of the river. I would highly suggest the latter, largely because it gives you a scenic view of the surrounding hills (perhaps more to the point: it's just cool to do). From a more practical perspective, you then get to walk down the mountain right to the castle and tour that separately.

The Castle has been rebuilt over the past 30 years and is quite well done, with an easily followed itinerary you are given upon admission. It is definitely above average for its type in Europe.

I could have easily spent another few days in the surrounding area, it is quite an idyllic experience with swans floating down the river and children playing nearby. There is also the Victor Hugo museum in the town and several shops and restaurants.

Highly recommended.
