We had a guided tour of the Abbey by a former student of the college which was very enlightening. The current Abbey was built in the early 1700s.It sits atop a hillside with wonderful views over the Danube in the Wachau valley.
It is incredibly opulent. It comprises inter alia a school for up to 900 pupils, an astonishing library and a church.
The library is so large it comprises several rooms and contains many rare medieval texts.
The Abbey contains many beautiful frescoes and some of the ceilings are painted to give the "troupe d'eoil " effect which makes the ceiling look higher.
The church itself is very opulent like the rest of the Abbey.

It’s well worth visiting the ancient Benedictine Abbey (first founded in 1089, current stunning building built on early 1700s) as well as a pretty small town at the bottom of the hill. And to round out the day, include a sightseeing river cruise down the Danube to Krem. It’s a very scenic and lovely 2 hour river cruise through the stunning Wachau Valley that passes the picturesque town of Durnstein as well as ample vineyards, castles and other sights, all while sitting on deck enjoying a glass of local wine or beer. Krem has lots of good dining options for lunch or dinner. You can purchase a combo-ticket from the Vienna Westbahnhof (on the subway line) for about 55 Euro that covers your train to Melk (about an hour trip), the boat from Melk to Krem (2 hours) and the return train to Vienna from Krems, making it a complete and very enjoyable full day trip!

This is another abbey tour. They are interesting and the place w-is beautifully located. Unfortunately the fog was so thick that we couldn't enjoy the out door views. At the end of the tour they have a small cafe. The breakfast pretzel was very tasty.

Very beautiful historic church. No pictures inside the church allowed. They are strict about this. But there is a gift shop which has postcards and books in many languages available for a reasonable price.

We drove from Vienna on our way to Salzburg. Melk is a wonderful place to stop for a refreshment and stunning scenery. The monastery is very well kept, the gardens are beautiful and green. The monastery gardenes is very beautiful and interesting.
