One of our stops while riding the Danube Bike Trail was Melk, home to the stunning Melk Abbey which sits high above the Old Town on a rocky outcrop. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a working Benedictine abbey with monks in residence. It is indeed a place worth seeking out.
We rode our bikes up to the abbey and were able to leave them in bike racks just outside the main entrance. We did a relaxed self-guided tour of the abbey and grounds though next time I’d probably elect to do the English language tour as it was not expensive and is scheduled regularly. Where you buy your entry ticket you can pick up a site map to follow as you explore if you choose not to do a tour. Make sure to take time to visit the gardens and to check out the view from the front of the abbey to the valley below.
