The atmosphere is fantastic and cakes are very tasty. I liked a lot the Cafe Central cake. It is very crowdy, but it deserves the visit.

I had been told in the past that the grumpiest work category are Viennese waiters. Well, a quick lunch at the Central's proved this theory true! The room is certainly a 'classic' and maybe deserves a visit. But we were welcomed by a lady in a bad mood and served by a waiter in a worse one! In their obsessive rush to free tables (to allow others to sit), he did not even ask us what we would want to drink! First time in my life!
The food was OK, very much average, french fries were too greasy.
If you really feel visiting just have a coffee, no need to spend money on a meal.

Early on Sunday morning, we arrived just before opening time at 10.00am, and actually headed the queue. We nearly changed our minds because of this, and clearly Cafe Central is a tourist destination but the spacious interior and friendly service made up for the wait. One can imagine the coffee house discourse of fin de siecle Vienna here - it's elegant and the aproned waiters were helpful, if busy! We had a nice breakfast though the coffee was surprisingly disappointing - the melange was weak and foamy and we had to order alternatives - I went for the coffee pot, which was much better coffee. Eggs, bread and fruit were fine - but the atmosphere is what makes it. To be honest we had as good if not better breakfast at the GoldenEgg uptown near Belvedere, which is just a traditional local cafe. However, lovely to be right in the centre and follow in the footsteps of Viennese cafe society! Pleasant staff and service!

As a tourist destination to sample its history it would be all too easy for the Cafe to fall into an attitude of not having to try. Our experience here suggests they are doing very well to avoid this. Yes it was very busy, and we had to queue outside but the staff were welcoming and our lunch of goulash and beer was perfect for a sharp March day

We joined the queue after a long day of sightseeing to enter what seemed to be a busy cafe, but in reality got in quickly. Three of us were allocated a table for six, so we were very comfortable and had good views of the beautiful innards of the cafe. We tried a bottle of (delicious) dry, green wine while a pianist tinkled the ivories (to applause), we people watched and enjoyed the ambience. We then decided to stay on for dinner so chose steak and liver dishes from a limited menu. The food was basic, and tasty.
