The church was built between 1623 and 1627 on the site of an earlier chapel and was built at the time when the Jesuits were the dominant force behind the Counter-Reformation. They had power and this building was about proving it and its broad high facade moreorless dominates the Dr-Ignaz-Seipel-Plaz.

The church was given a Baroque makeover by the Italian Jesuit Brother, Andrea Pozzo (architect and painter), between 1703 and 1705. He added the twin towers to the church and reworked the façade.

The inside is to be honest rather gaudy and takes a bit of getting used to - all massive marble columns and frescoes. However it is worth the time to take a good look around.

Pozzo created the startling Dome and other ceiling frescoes during the renovation. If you look up the frescoes in the Dome look magnificent. However, if you walk beyond the Dome looking up you will start to see the very clever illusion he created - the Dome is actually painted on a flat part of the ceiling is a remarkable example of illusionistic technique called quadrature.

A great church

The Church of the Jesuits has a very beautiful and colourful interior. There were no tourists when we visited and so it was very quiet !

It was a wonderful church to visit. The design was intricate and one of a kind. When you are in Vienna don't miss this church.
