Description: Welcome to Characters Teahouse and Hot Stone Restaurant. A secret to be found. Tucked away in a side street we are not easy to find. But when you do you are in for a big surprise. We are different to say the least..You could say quirky and you would be right. Old second hand china, cups, saucers, plates, glasses, furniture etc all bought from charity shops and completely mismatched giving the place character and ambiance hence the name Characters. Food is wholesome and unpretentious ,soups, sandwiches, hand made cakes & scones of different flavours forming the basis of our now famous Afternoon Tea. Accompanied by proper loose leaf tea & coffee of your choice we are open daytime 11am to 4pm Monday to Saturday. In the evening Friday & Saturday serving from 6.30pm to 8.00pm our also famous "Steak on the Stone" Accompanied by "Bring your Own" wine, beer or champagne. Whenever you decide to visit you will be greeted with a big welcome from the staff & management of this lovely family run restaurant..hopefully see you soon. Characters Team

My wife and I went with eight friends to this restaurant last Saturday evening for the 'Steak on a Stone' experience. We had a great time enjoying the best Welsh Rib-Eyed Steak we have ever tasted - and you get to cook it yourself on a laver stone ! Our host Bret was most helpful and entertaining making us all feel so welcome. Its one of the best hidden gems in Llandudno - don't miss it if you like either beef steaks or fish steaks. And better still you can take your own wine!!!

Characters is a real gem, and delivers far more than you'd expect from first appearances. This friendly cafe opens two nights a week as an evening dining venue specialising in stone cooked meat & fish. Run by a lovely couple, Characters is absolutely full of character and while the menu is simple, every morsel is utterly delicious. What's more, its a BYO with no corkage making it exceptional value!

My wife and I were tipped off about this place while staying in Llandudno last weekend. We went in by day to order some sandwiches for a picnic-walk and although the evening service was booked, we managed to convince them to squeeze us in after a disappointing meal the night before at Osborne's (see other review). We were so glad that they did!

The decor inside is fun and eclectic with every table and chair combination being different. We ate downstairs which could have been dingy, but the clever decoration and lighting made it cosy instead.

The menu is based around a series of meat and fish options cooked at your table on a hot stone. You have to pre-order your food and can choose between beautiful welsh black beef (fillet or rib-eye), welsh lamb steak, tuna or salmon. This is an ingenious way to get around the venue's lack of a large kitchen and food prep area.

There are a few starters to choose from (I had an ardennes pate served with homemade cranberry sauce - delicious), and then you wait, eagerly listening out for the sizzling sound that means your main course is on the way! We shared a fillet steak and a lamb steak, each accompanied by a trio of sauces. Slicing of thin slivers of the steak and dipping them into the crushed garlic oil was heavenly. We'd splashed out on a £9 bottle of Pinotage from Sainsbury's too so the wine was a perfect match!

We finished with a warm chocolate fudge cake served with ice-cream which was as gooey and indlugent as a pudding can be.

Limited menu restaurants are apparently very popular in London at the moment, so this place in Llandudno is right on trend! Its simple, its not fussy, and its absolutely fabulous. If you want to go make sure you book ahead as it's very difficult to get a table for a weekend.

Yesterday, my wife and I decided upon a day trip to Llandudno and in view of its high praise we chose to eat at Characters late afternoon. What a charming, welcoming, characterful and quaint place! We had a very warm welcome and we both opted for the Lobscows ... and very glad we did. It was served in large bowls with fresh crusty bread and plenty of butter (I do hate it when you have to ask for more butter). The Lobscows was topped with two thick slices of mature Welsh cheddar. The meat was plentiful (beef in this case, but I was told that sometimes it's lamb) and very tender. Neither of us had room for cake or scones. I had a pot of loose leaf breakfast tea which was very refreshing, and my wife chose the coffee which turned out to be the only negative of our visit - it lacked flavour. Nevertheless, we shall undoubtedly return when we next visit Llandudno ... soon I hope, so that we can try some of the other delights on the menu.
