Description: We pride ourselves on producing the highest quality food from the finest ingredients - beef, from local herds that has had a minimum of 21 days maturing; lamb and pork also from local farms; fish that is delivered fresh - never frozen - from St Ives daily; marvellous and varied English cheeses from Tavistock and fruit and vegetables from Helston. All our food is prepared and cooked from these fresh ingredients in our kitchen; no bought-in already prepared frozen food is ever used. Our menu and specials are ever changing and offer a wide selection to choose from including a number of vegetarian dishes. On Sunday lunchtimes we have a choice of two roasts (one of which is always sirloin of South Devon beef), steak and kidney pudding, haddock and chips together with a selection of dishes from the specials board.

After reading reviews and speaking to people about this place, we were really excited to go and try it out. We arrived to an empty bar/restaurant. The menu is pricey but if the quality is good, we don't mind paying for it.
The veg for the fish pie had seen better days. The sirloin was nicely cooked. Was it value and of high quality for the price they charge? No.
We didn't care that we were the only ones there but what was rather noticeable in an empty pub was the conversations between staff and I assume the owner?? Discussing staff disputes, bad mouthing other staff members etc is completely unprofessional.
Would we go back....probably not.

My husband and I stayed on the ground floor, room 1. We were the unassuming quiet couple.......

Given the price & how the website advertised & presented the place as a premium establishment, it was really disappointing.

Negatives -

Ensuite bathroom -
Broken & dirty bin
Missing light bulb
Broken bath panel
Shower screen badly leaks
Leading to badly stained & rotting wooden floor
Broken/loose toilet seat
Broken hand wash dispenser bracket
Main shower head leaking at the sides
Sanitary bag dispenser empty

Bedroom -
Fire door closing mechanism missing
Significant amount of other people’s hair & dust under the bed (see photo)
Dusty inside the drawers, including a loose sewing needle I had to remove on arrival
Stained & dirty cushions
Loose curtain rail on arrival, falling off by the time we left
Stained & mouldy long curtains
Curtain tie backs missing, why not remove the redundant hooks or replace the ties?
No hot chocolate sachets
No biscuits
No tissues in bedroom
No bin in bedroom
Unswept (over I would think many months) private bedroom patio area, garden earth cascading over path & large weeds growing in path.
Aggressive signage in the bedroom & on the entry gate made us feel most unwelcome.

Used panty liner by our accommodation main front door (see photo) on drive which we removed in to one of our dog poo bags on the 3rd day of our stay..... We noticed the owner walked past this to his car every day.

Evening food menu over priced for what it was but we gave it a few goes, virtually empty bar on our first night, so on the third night we jumped ship & went to the Peter Tavy Inn where we enjoyed a warm & thriving atmosphere with good quality food at reasonable prices.

Continuing review of Elephant’s Nest -
Owners appeared diffident & uninterested & never introduced themselves.

Wooden bridge in garden which customers walk over had collapsed in places but was still open, we noticed the owners shutting it off on our 3rd day, with new planks we presume ready to fit, to one side. That would have been a safety concern for a long time.....

The actual experience of staying here was so at odds with the promise of the website, it couldn’t have been more of a disappointing contrast.

We only live an hour away, come to Dartmoor walking every week on day trips. We are both born locally & love Dartmoor. Three or four times a year we stay for three nights in hotels/pubs/B&B’s on Dartmoor with a group of friends. We often stay at The Cherrybrook Hotel, a beautiful, well kept, well run hotel which we would highly recommend. This visit to the Elephant’s Nest was to test out a new hotel for the group to stay in for a change. As one of our friends said when we reported back ‘thank you for taking one for the team’.

I also run a business & take my legal, ethical, health & safety responsibilities seriously. It’s not hard...... you just need to care about people.

As all these negatives; for what advertises itself as a premium establishment; far outweigh the positives, we wouldn’t dream of returning. However, here are the few positives we experienced - warm & friendly staff (not the owners), excellent breakfasts, quiet at night, dogs allowed, able to enter room an hour or so early on arrival, pretty pub garden, pretty hanging baskets, attractive bar area.

Come on owners! Stop trading on previous reputation & get your acts together & demonstrate some management & customer focus!

Must say this wasn’t a great experience from start to finish.
Went for lunch here with my wife on a quiet weekday and it was not great.
I was asked to leave my credit card behind the bar for security as we were eating in the garden, I should have walked at that point as in all my years of eating out no one has ever asked that, unbelievable!
We had streak and kidney pudding but it had no favour because they forgot the kidney.
Must say the Palmers IPA was the worst I have ever drank as beer goes.
If I were you I’d give this place a wide berth as they obviously don’t trust there customers but should be looking at the kitchen staff as some had stolen the kidney from the puddings!!

Very over priced and out of the way, save your petrol and eat at home.

Only two as that’s for the view..

Unfortunately we have had some bad experiences with customers walking off without paying from the garden. There is always the option of paying when ordering.
Apologies if you did not receive any kidney, if alerted to this at the time we could have exchanged it. We currently have 3 real ales to choose from if Palmer s is not to your liking and customers are welcome to try before buying.
