booked a 2 night break on a bed, breakfast and evening meal for ourselves and our granddaughter, for a treat for her. we on booking requested a large family room or suite with a sea view and balcony if poss
we were assured we were allocated a new refurbished large family room with sea view, and told it was one of the best in the hotel , and we paid additional charges for this large family room...
on arrival we had quite a trek to find the room as it was on 2nd floor, accessed by stairs to 1st floor, then a huge walk along non ending corridors to another two sets of steps
When we arrived at our room, we noted the new furnishing BUT...
The room was very small, the king sized bed we were promised was a small double, and the two single beds were in fact two chairs convertible to single beds
Only 1 chair had been prepared as we were a party of 3 not 4. but the space was so limited the end of the single bed was only inches from the end of the double, so if the two chairs had been made up, there would have been no space what so ever... This is not what is expected in a family room
The furnishing were new... but very poor quality, the wardrobe was in fact just a carcase with shelves and a small hanging rail, and dressing table was just a table, no drawers....
we noted on arrival one of the wall lights was hanging loose exposing bare wires, a mantainence manager arrived to repair the lamp. but also made us aware that the bedside light switch was broken and would be repaired later
The rooms bathroom had a ventilation fan which rattled constantly when the lights were switched on so we avoided using it as much as possible,

At our first evening meal, we read the menu and were hopeful for a good meal, suitable for all three, as a wide selection seemed to be available
But on visiting the buffet areas we were so disappointed
The pate starter was poorly presented, and no toast was available, the salad was totally limp and un appertising and only the soup was edible
The main courses inc a fish dish, a steak, roast lamb and lamb curry
we chose 1 fish meal, a steak and my granddaughter had curry
no one was able to eat there meals as the fish meal was so overcooked it was hard and the cheese sauce had thick large lumps , my husbands steak, resembled shoe leather and was virtually impossible to cut, and my granddaughters curry contained thick lumps of gristle, the desserts fared no better so we all had a bowl of ice cream and left, we told the waiter that the food was not good, and we were told sorry but its better if you come in earlier when everything is freshly cooked, ...it was only 7 oclock.. hours before end of service
at breakfast we again saw overcooked badly presented food, bacon and eggs sitting in fat, sausages totally overcooked and porridge which would only be eaten with a knife and fork, as it was a solid mass, we had yoghurt tea and toast and left
on our last night we ventured again into the restaurant, expecting to have to eat elsewhere if the food had not improved, But this time we did manage to have a roast pork meal that was palatable, the starters were an un appertising mess, and desserts consisted of pieces of cake , with again ice cream available. The restaurant needs to drastically up its game, and refresh foods that have sat too long, quality standards need to be adhered to, and overcooked, badly presented food should be removed
The hotel is in a good location, and if refurbished fully, and food standards raised, could be quite good, but stop selling rooms only suitable for 2 persons as family rooms, and clarify exactly where rooms are located, and the difficulty in access, and improve food standards
I would not re visit, and would not recommend this hotel to anyone to visit, . we have stayed in the other hotels in the area in the past, and this hotel is by far the worst
we left exceedingly disappointed with all aspects of this 2 night break , we feel we did not receive the basic requirements we booked and paid for ...

we booked a couple of nights db&b and the first impression of the hotel was pleasing with good parking and a great location on the promenade.the reception staff were very polite and efficient and the room, although on the back of the hotel, was a nice size.the meals are self service which is not to our liking and food quality was ok without being great but there was enough choice.if you are looking for fine dining then better to not book dinner as there are many fine restaurants within easy walking distance.the hotel caters mainly for families and the entertainment is directed at children.overall the hotel is good value for money, comfortable, well positioned and have lovely staff, and we will return again when school holidays are over.

Room Tip: ask for a spacious room.

We stayed at this hotel same time last year and only gave it a rating of two. We returned as it was ideal for my old Mum who was travelling with us.. I am so glad we came back..What a difference..There has been a refurb in the ball room, the place was spotless, there were no children running around and the whole place just felt calm..We also noticed that there was an abundance of staff about at all times and they were all smartly dressed, had their staff lanyards on and incredibly polite. This included the restaurant staff to the reception and in the bar.. All very professional and a significant improvement from last year. I would have given it five stars but the room did smell damp and it could do with a new bathroom.. My little boy was in tears as we left this afternoon begging me to rebook for nextbyear..Well done St Ives a great place for a mini break in a fabulous British seaside resort...

Room Tip: My Mum is not very mobile so we requested room 63 on the ground floor in the side of the hotel with its own entrance.

My partner and I stayed here on a deal of dinner, bed and breakfast in July. Arriving at the hotel we found plenty of parking at the front and were met at reception by a very pleasant young chap who welcomed us in a very professional and friendly manner, whilst checking us in.

Heading to our room we found it to be clean and comfortable albeit a little sparse in décor. After settling in, we decided to visit the pool and sauna. Half the pool was closed off for swimming lessons but this was no big deal as it still left sufficient space to have a swim. We really enjoyed the use of the sauna at the poolside.

Having booked dinner for 7:30 we realised that maybe that had been a mistake as, due to the fact it was a buffet style meal, some of the food was not at its best. The starters were fine and the meat of the main course was good and well cooked. However, the veg when not cold was, in the case if the roast potatoes, almost inedible. Because they had been sitting under heat lamps for so long the crust had become almost solid. The interior was soft once you fought to get into it, but again was cold. The sweet (I had sticky toffee pudding) was served without the choice of cream, ice cream or custard but just a toffee sauce which I found strange but it was admittedly very tasty.

All the staff we encountered were very friendly with one exception. One member of staff, who was in the pool area, appeared to want to be anywhere else but there. I asked the young man who booked us in for a certain type of beer (Budweiser) and as she walked past, without looking at us said “We don’t have that, we only have ……” in quite a brusque manner. In fact every time we interacted with this member of staff we never got a smile and she barely looked at us. This was shame as all the other staff were lovely and this made it all the more obvious.

After dinner we had a drink and retired to our room. The bed was very comfortable and we both had a good nights sleep. In the morning we revisited the pool (no swimming lessons so we had the whole pool to ourselves) before breakfast. The breakfast was again buffet style but we had no complaints about the quality of any of the items we had.

Checking out was quick and easy, again with a most helpful and friendly member of staff. We enquired about leaving the car in the car park as we wished to explore some of the town and this was absolutely no problem.

So, how would we rate this? The staffs of this hotel were one of its main assets (with one exception), the room was sparse but comfortable. The pool and sauna were excellent.

Although the food at dinner could have been better due to the buffet style, something that could be improved by preparing fresh vegetables on a regular basis and not leaving them to become cold and/or hard in the servery. Breakfast was good and enjoyable. Both meals were served in a comfortable dining room again with friendly and helpful staff in attendance.

Yes, the hotel could do with a bit of money spent on it but we found it comfortable and good value for money. Sort out the dinner serving and we would consider revisiting.
