We took the train into Windemere from Manchester for the day wanting to see some of the Lake District. We stopped at the Tourist Information booth just outside the train station and they suggested we rent bikes in town (next to them) otherwise we could walk to the ferry and rent there. After being on the train for over an hour we wanted to stretch our legs a bit and decided to walk to the ferry. Boy were we glad we did!!! It is about a 45 minute walk, but downhill. We were glad not to be dodging traffic with bikes!! Not to mention we would have had to push them back uphill 45 min on our return. Since we rented right beside the ferry we just hopped right on with the bikes (£1 each) and had a fabulous ride on the bike paths on Ambleside. The rental was £25 for an adult bike including helmets. They also send you with a lock and a replacement inner tube if you want one. There are a couple of cafes on Ambleside and Beatrix Potters house Hilltop. It is very picturesque. After you take the ferry back, drop off your bike and you are free to stop and shop on your way back to town. Very convenient and bikes were in good condition.
