Owner description: Steephill cove is a beautiful Hidden gem. With its ever changing beach of sand, shingle and fantastic rock pools it is no wonder that families return here year after year. Over the years Steephill has become a hot spot to eat as well. With The Boathouse Seafood Restaurant serving wonderful freshly caught Crab and Lobster and The Crab Shed serving fresh crab pasties and to add to that compliment there is Cove Coffee Shop with home made cakes, ice cream and gorgeous goodies to buy along with Hopes Happy Hut for children and The Beach Shack serving fare (all only open during the daytime hours). Steephill can only be reached by foot which adds to its safety and pure Charm... A true gem of old fashioned English seaside. A must visit for anyone on the island!

We walked down to Steephil cove from the Botanical Gardens and were a bit disappointed as the tide was in and there was no beach. We were doubly disappointed to find that the Crab Shack was closed and would not open until Saturday[we would be gone by then]. However the Beach Shack was open, but heaving!! We did however return the following day to purchase some amazing prawn baguettes. They had run out of Crab.
I would expect the Cove to be a lovely hideaway when the sun is out as well as the tide, but we were unfortunate in both events.

Luckily we walked on a beautiful day. The walk is exhilarating and could be challenging if unfit. A welcome cafe on the beach for a coffee then a return to Ventnor. Incredible views, a must visit.

We wandered from Ventnor along the cliff top and dropped down onto Sterphill Cove. What a wonderfully charming setting this is.

It’s as if time has stood still with charming beach side residences that had obviously stood the test of time: a haven for artists,

Ours was a quick visit but we stayed long enough to enjoy coffee and cake at the beach-side cafe , watching the gentle waves lap up almost to our feet.

Accommodation is available there. Steephill would make a romantic setting for those who want to ‘get away from it all.’

We visited Steephill Cove whilst in Ventnor for the day, we had been told of this place whilst looking for a spot to take the grandchildren ‘crabbing’ and decided to park up in the ‘La Falaise’ car park and walk. Fortunately, it was a sunny morning and the walk was quite enjoyable, made better by an impromptu air display by a couple of jets we believe preparing for the Bournemouth air show.
When we arrived at the cove we were stunned by the loveliness of it all, it would appear that you cannot drive here and so makes it a bit of a hidden gem being off the normal tourist trail (we later found that you can park in the Ventnor Botanical Gardens car park for £5 and visit the cove).
The cove is not large but has a semi-circular shoreline surrounding a sandy beach strewn with some large boulders. Fringing the cove is a series of small photogenic building mostly with a business relating to the cove (i.e. boat and wetsuit hire, refreshment and some very nice looking seafood restaurants).
We sat on the beach for a while, the rocks make some good seats and shady areas, whilst the children explored the rock pools in search of crabs. The area was not busy by the standards of the main beaches, and there was quite a relaxed atmosphere to be enjoyed.
There are public toilets at the Lighthouse end of the cove which appear to be provided by the business at the cove and are free to use though and donation is requested to help with their upkeep
A very charming spot, although we did not know it at the time, we would be returning fairly soon as part of a visit to the Botanical Gardens which has access to the coastal path and is not far from here.
Well worth a visit, especially if you combine it with the coastal walk from Ventnor, the whole experience being both very picturesque and photogenic.

A really beautiful and photogenic hidden gem, very photogenic and worth the effort to get to it. Crammed full of quirky eateries and little cottages and shacks, perfect for pottering about. You can park at the Botanic Gardens up on the main road (free if you combine it with a visit to the gardens) or walk the steep in places coast path along from Ventnor.
