“Superb Sunday Lunch”

Whitley Bay Golf Club
Reviewed 15 January 2017

The arrival of a new Steward encouraged us to visit the Golf Club for Sunday Lunch.

Home made and tasty, the food was excellent.

Highly recommended. We will be back soon.

Having played golf for 13 years now I have often considered playing this course but have been put off by rumours of unpleasant members with an undesirable attitude towards guests. From a golfing point of view, I am so glad my colleagues and I did play here. The professional in the shop was fantastically helpful and gave us some tips as it was our first time out. Credit to the green keepers for keeping the course in such brilliant condition even in the awful weather.

However, what will stop me visiting this course again was the disgusting accusative attitude of 4 lady members we encountered during our otherwise excellent round.

We had booked two tee times together as there were 5 of us playing. In order to keep our round fast and sociable, 2 would tee off and once they were clear, the 3 of us would follow. Corteous, we thought.

Apparently not according to this club's rude, egotistical lady members. Having been accused of playing as a 5 ball twice (which we were NOT!) we were made to listen to a barrage of abuse from 2 ladies behind us. As if this wasn't enough, a lady appeared from another hole, proceeded to not acknowledge our presence in order to complain to her "friends" that she had "definitely seen 'this lot' playing as 5 ball on the 9th".

We were never approached politely, we were outright accused of breaking the rules and then accused of lying. Neither of which we were doing. It is such a shame. Such a lovely course polluted by such rude people.

This club has always had a reputation for being unwelcoming. Unfortunately from what we experienced today, this reputation is completely justified.

Whitley Bay has always been an exceptional golf course with so many interesting and challenging holes but with the arrival of Simon Oliver the “new” Course Manager the course is turning into something really special. The care and attention that is now being shown to the greens, fringes, bunkers and fairways is really starting to pay off & the remodeling of holes 6, 7 & 8 only can enhance this fabulous golf course even more.

If you haven’t played it yet make sure you do & if you have, make sure you come back next year & witness the improvements. It is a great test of golf & a great place to be.
