We stayed at the Duke of Gordon for two nights in a superior double room.
The positives
- Room was large with dual aspect windows
- New bathroom suite with bath and shower
- Large comfortable bed.
- Plenty of parking
The negatives
- on check in you are given Covid safety info along with a flyer explaining how the hospitality industry has suffered during the pandemic and be nice to the staff that they have as they are trying their best due to staff shortages. This is a reasonable message but it is then everywhere you look, including stapled to all menus. It also doesn’t excuse poor service from the staff that are on shift. We expected service to be slow but an acknowledgment that someone will be with you rather than a blank look and continuing to wipe the bar/ pick up a glass, and being completely ignored by several members of staff is not ok.
- Paper cups in the room for tea and coffee and poor selection of tea/ coffee. I assume this is some sort of Covid safety procedure, but having travelled all over Scotland staying at various hotels not sure how paper cups that are not environmentally friendly are helping to keep people safe. We would happily have washed our cups for the duration of our visit instead of staff having to enter our room rather than have paper ones.
- There is building work going on. Builders started drilling, banging and cutting into brick work at 8:30am. The work taking place was so loud you couldn’t have a conversation over breakfast. We thought it could be some unplanned emergency repairs but no it was planned. After explaining to the receptionist that we had booked the hotel as it was advertised as quiet and had we known they were having building work, we work have booked elsewhere, we were given a free drink for the inconvenience but would have rather been informed so I could have stayed elsewhere.
- Breakfast selection was ok.
- Dinner in the restaurant on the second night arrived, roast beef dinner with no gravy.
- Both mornings I ordered decaf tea with breakfast to be given Earl grey. The young waitress did bring me the decaf tea box to show me but agreed the tea in it was Earl grey after smelling it. As I can’t have caffeine ( due to a neurological disability) I left the hot drinks completely to be safe.
- On check out they tried to charge me again for the room, the receptionist was sure they hadn’t received the payment so I had to pull up the confirmation of payment on my phone. She then checked again and found the payment. She admitted this happen sometimes if they hadn’t checked all the ways that people are able to book.
- our room was located at the top of a set of stairs so we could hear the door bang every time someone went past our room.
- we were told we couldn’t have breakfast at 8am on the first day due to a coach party so needed to eat before or after this. This hotel is very much coach party ordinated.
- The website is out of date. The menus advertised as available are not, again I assume this is down to either Covid or staff but this should be reflected on the website.

Not a negative just to be aware, some rooms are only accessible by stairs, so if you choose to stay here and have mobility issues ask for a room accessible by the lift.

The standard and service that this hotel charge per night does not match up. There is much better for the money in the surrounding area.

I would not recommend this hotel and can confidently say it spoilt our trip in the Cairngorms.

Stayed here for 1 night travelling further up North. Lounge bar was pleasant however the service through in the dining room for meals was appalling. Didn't even get shown to our table, just got pointed towards a table and got made to make our own way there. Less than a minute of sitting down the waitress came over to take our food order after watching us sitting down not even having the chance to read the menu. She came back moments later and took the food order. Didn't even get offered a drink. We asked if we can order drinks aswell and she told us abruptly that someone else will come and take the drink orders. No they never. Nobody came near us. Who has a meal without a drink. I mean really? Ordered soup for starters. No bread. Didn't even get offered. Other people come into the dining room and get a roll or bread put down in front of them before even ordering. So why are we getting missed out especially when we ordered soup. Mentioned to the young waiter guy and he instantly passed the buck and blamed all other staff. Mentioned we still haven't been asked about a drink. He abruptly replied 'you want one now then" no apologies given and his tone was not pleasent at all. After our meal, we mentioned to the receptionist about our dining room experience and she didn't seem interested in the slightest. By far the worse service we have ever had. Room itself was basic and a bit dated but pleasant enough. Won't be back again

Hotel gorgeous, staff lovely and attentive. However the room we stayed in was extremely hot. No air conditioning. Windows don't open wide enough.
Bed comfortable. Food is exceptional, especially the roast beef.

The location is smashing set in the village of Kinguisse , facing a lovely park - quiet location - plenty of car parking , really easy to find and just off the main route into the Highlands - a great place to break a journey.
The reality was poor - the Hotel itself is dated - the common areas badly in need of a face lift - even a few flowers would have been welcome - the room was very basic - furniture dated - bathroom from the 1980s - with a wobbly floor.
Breakfast was adequate - the serving staff - headed by a tall middle aged Gentleman who appeared to have lost his sense of humour and had no interest in the guests in terms of a welcome or a smile. The two young male waiters displayed zero interest in the guests and one had a huge pair of black gloves - like something you would use to clean drains. This Hotel has so much potential in looks - ,location etc but the staff and the dated rooms are doing their best to supress its real personality - surely the Highlands deserves much better than this?

Room tip: ask for an upgrade - if one exists

Last minute getaway. Absolutely stunning place to have a hotel. The hotel itself is quite dated but I loved it! It’s cosy! It’s nice to see a bit of character.
What makes this hotel is its staff. Reception staff couldn’t be more helpful and so friendly.

Our room was front facing on the first floor. Lovely room. Clean and tidy. Bed was very comfortable.
No noise could be heard during the night with the room facing the road. Really loved our room! Booked superior deluxe.

We had dinner and drinks in the bar - as said previously - service is really quite slow. Although the sign says not to order at the bar, we did on more than one occasion as we would of been waiting until tomorrow for someone to take our order.
Food was ok, both ordered fish & chips. The batter a little to greasy for my liking.
Breakfast was good. Quick service.

Lovely location. Hotel was fab! Would definitely recommend.

Plenty parking around the hotel including their large car park.

Room tip: Lovely walk behind golf course.
