Beechwood is now available as a 10-bedroom holiday let. I'm here for Christmas with 14 other members of my extended family.

Inside, the place looks every bit as if it were recently a hotel. For those of you who know John Cleese's "Faulty Towers" television sit-com, well you would be easily at home. It even has a bar room for "the Major" to enjoy his pre-dinner drink! But alas the bar is now empty apart from what you choose to stock in it.

Bed rooms (nearly) all have en-suite (either shower or bath) and are either twin or doubles with one single room and one double + single. Kitchen, (reasonably well stocked with pots and pans etc. Plenty of larder space with fridges, and freezers everywhere. The dining room will gobble 20 or so people.

The building rambles up and down staircases and along corridors. Great for exploring. Two lounge areas, one with TV.

All this is contained in a building, which, like the rest of Ilfracombe, has seen better days.

Two things to be particularly aware of. First, if your not so good at walking or climbing stairs, don't go anywhere near the place. Second, if your car is slung low to the ground, you will undoubtedly damage it going up and down the steep, (very steep), and twisting driveway.

Its just over a mile walk into Ilfracombe town centre and harbour area. On the way you will pass maybe thirty other buildings of similar size. All of these are either former hotels converted into care homes, former hotels converted into holiday apartments, former hotels boarded up and abandoned or still used as hotels but in need of an awful lot of TLC.

At this time of year, Ilfracombe is as grim as the grey skies descending on it from Dartmoor and Exmoor and largely closed for the season. Having said that there are still plenty of places open for lunch, evening meal or just a drink. A large-ish supermarket caters for most of your needs if you're inclined to self-cater in Beechwood's kitchen. And of course, the cliff walks are as bracing as ever.

The great pity is that you can't visit Lundy island at this time of year.... but with 15 of us together for Christmas, there is rarely a dull moment anyway!

Room Tip: The back of the building faces south and overlooks the steep valley, the front of the building faces...

This a very nice hotel. My wife and I came here as part of an extended honeymoon for a gourmet weekend. The owners Philip and Helen made us very welcome with good advice where to visit and walk. The Coastal Walk is about a half mile from the hotel and you need to be fairly fit just to reach it, but worth the walk into Ilfracombe.
The gourmet weekend itself was excellent with the atmosphere described by my wife as being at a dinner party with friends. The food was excellent and the choice of wines by Philip very apt and plentiful with great service by Philip and Tom, the future son-in-law
.The Champagne reception on the first night broke the ice with the other guests and we had excellent canapes to accompany the Champagne.Apparently this was the owners first attempt at a gourmet night, but I would definitely go again.
