Owner description: The North Yorkshire Moors Railway is one of the world’s greatest heritage railway experiences with thrills and education at its heart. Climb on-board a steam or heritage diesel train on one of the earliest and most historic lines. Experience 24 miles of Yorkshire’s amazing scenery at this must-see visitor attraction. We will take you on a journey you can’t even imagine! Explore the Railway • Pickering Station is a must-see 1930’s themed station that will transport you back in time to the locomotive steam era. • A must-see is the celebrity station, Goathland, which became Hogsmeade Station in the first Harry Potter film. • Explore Grosmont Station which is home to the operating and engineering world of the NYMR. If you are lucky you might be able to catch a sneaky peak at the work taking place on our engines! • Visit Whitby with its narrow streets and bustling harbour overlooked by the striking ruins of Whitby Abbey. • Explore Levisham Station which is surrounded by the North York Moors.

About our trip on Thursday, 28/06/18 (Pickering - Grosmont return):

On a positive note, the staff are friendly, helpful, informative, and quite considerate.
The journey was a wonderful experience; being a step back in time, through wonderful scenery, well preserved buildings and Locomotives, helped by good weather of course.

On a less positive note, we ordered some toast, and tea at the Station Cafe at Pickering at around 08:50. The tea was a cheap tasting and quite dreadful blend, the toast seemed to be extremely cheap supermarket - packet bread. This is very unfortunate when I am sure that it would not be breaking the bank to aquire locally sourced items, irrespective, to please customers further, and enhance the experience.

I must mention Stephen, a volunteer on both the outward and return Journey - a ticket inspector I think. A real credit, Helpful, and considerate!

Thank you for your review and all of your positive comments and also for your kind remarks about Stephen. I'm sorry that you were disappointed by the tea and toast at the cafe on Pickering Station and I have passed on your comments to the lady in charge.

Had a wonderful, nostalgic ride through the beautiful, sun drenched North Yorkshire Moors to Whitby with the sounds and smell of the immaculately kept steam loco's puffing along. Not a cheap journey but paying a little 'over the top' to keep these smoke and steam breathing wonders running the line is well worth it. Not to missed!

We enjoyed a glorious day out, on what was a super hot day - we travelled from Pickering to Goathland on the train enjoying the leisurely pace and taking in the views and scenery. There was a buffet car on board so we could enjoy a coffee and a nice chat, generally relaxed as we travelled through the North Yorkshire Moors. We ate in Goatland & caught the return train home - very friendly informative staff - we were very impressed that it is all manned by volunteers. Well done everyone on the North Yorkshire moors railway for keeping such a exciting piece of British engineering heritage alive.

The ride is relatively expensive (albeit journey time Pickering to Whitby is similar to us going Wakefield to London) but we bought our tickets via an excellent national deal. The journey is always scenic but extra special when there are blue skies. Equally Whitby is wonderful on a hot sunny day. As always enthusiastic knowledgable staff are a credit on this railway and the carriages were in excellent condition.
