Lorenz is a "straussi", the German equivalent of the French "ferme auberge" but with more of a pub element. Set in a small village, it was clearly once a group of farm buildings and has retained its character. You can sit inside the atmospheric interior (a bit crowded sometimes at weekends) or at trestle tables outside in an open barn structure. But wherever you choose to park yourself, the food is delicious and typical of this kind of establishment. We were there in the asparagus season and enjoyed a plentiful helping of it, washed down with the local beer. Service is friendly and informal. Afterwards, walk to nearby Staufen through the asparagus fields to work off your hearty lunch!

Freiburg has a great tradition for the Straussi experience and we were recommended the Lorenz by a local who claimed that it was one of the best. The recommendation was absolutely accurate.
The venue is wonderful. The outdoor eating is venued in a courtyard area which has its own aviary! The old barns have been converted into the indoor dining space. They are amazing as the walls are totally covered with mirrors.
The food is excellent. The menu is extensive, which does not follow the real Staussi philosophy but it does mean that you can keep returning and always try something new. Vegetarian options are many and varied. I had the asparagus in a spinach pancake with a cream sauce. Absolutely delicious, filling and still a light dish.
The staff are great and helpful.
The only down side to the staussi is that it can be difficult to get a table. They do not have a booking system. We went on a Sunday and arrived 5 minutes after opening time. By then the place (which is vast) was totally full. I suggest that either you come at opening time or about an hour an a half after as the first diners will be leaving.
I hope you enjoy the place as much as we did.

We were taken for dinner in this great original place by a friend who lives locally. Food and wine are excellent and locally produced. Great value for money

Very interesting interior design with hundreds of mirrors in all sizes. Great food. Crowded in the weekends. It needs some patience but the local food and wine is worth the time.

The food and atmosphere was great! Wonderful ambience with all the mirrors! Highly recommend for a great value for money dinner! It can get full, so a 15 minute wait could happen, but its worth the wait!
