Apart from the obvious requirement of really good, local food which has never disappointed, one of the best aspects of this restaurant is the warmth and hospitality you immediately feel upon entering. You are really made to feel welcome. The food is a little different to some of the other local restaurants too which makes a pleasant change if you (like us) are in the habit of eating out fairly often.
We were late for lunch. We arrived at 14:15! Our friend who was there before us, spoke to the owner who accepted to keep the restaurant open just for the three of us!
It was an incredible experience. Sig. Melchiore, the owner of this beautiful, old fashioned restaurant, dismissed all his staff anegan, converted himself into a cook! An elegant cook! He carefully asked what we were eating (difficult since I am eating vegan, my friend Kosher) and 30 minutes later he came out of the kitchen with ultra tasty Italian food.
The three of us had always a nice chat in between a three-course meal with Melchiore. 2.5 hours flew by and we have not even noticed.
This was such a unique experience that if you have a car in 5 Terre region/Tuscany/La Spezia, coming to this place will definitely make your trip to Tuscany even more memorable.
Stopped off on a rainy summer's day to find this real gem. Wonderful food made from traditional ingredients and can throughly recommend the lasagne. Service was brilliant and very friendly, enjoyed in fantastic surroundings.
Antico Mulino is a small family-run establishment, with the proprietor (Melchiorre) carefully overseeing dining room and kitchen. The restaurant has a comfortable and relaxed feeling, with local families and tourists clearly enjoying its pleasant setting for both in-door and out-door dining (this latter a covered terrace on a little square). My wife and I dined here twice during a June trip to the Villafranca region. The experience was excellent both times. Our initial dinner – a special celebration, our wedding anniversary – was so perfect that we brought a guest with us for our second dinner, and we were again equally pleased. Our meals were delicious, featuring such favorites as raviolini con funghi porcini, tagliatelle, baked cod, grilled vegetables, lamb chops and roasted potatoes, plus home-made gelato for dessert and a good house wine. The service was expert: welcoming, friendly and timely, with good menu advice and little extras (complementary biscotti, etc.). All in all, this restaurant is a real find!
