I had heard the best comments about this paella, and this week I went to try it and it was just amazing, the service and food are absolutely excellent, I recommend the seafood paella.

A great place to go for lunch, spend the afternoon or have a fantastic dinner à la Española, amid tapas, paellas, good wine and great music! It is the great combination to have a magnificent time!

My wife and I had lunch at El Barral last month. The glowing recommendations of a good friend bolstered our excitement and anticipation prior to our first dining experience at El Barral. However, after all was said and done, my wife and I were disappointed with the quality, and value, of the food at this upscale Spanish restaurant in the Buena Mesa dining district of Envigado.

The restaurant is quaint and cozy... a perfect place to dine with someone special or a group of friends. We dined during the lunch hour on a weekday, and the place was packed with local business people. The dining areas are ample, and the seating is comfortable. I imagined the romance and ambiance of an early evening dinner. We were seated at a table for four in a section open to the sky. The service is genuinely warm and professional. The wine list is thorough (and expensive).

El Barral's menu is Spanish cuisine dominated by the Mediterranean dish known as paella. The generous mix of rice, seafood and chicken is one of my favorite meals. It is normally a deliciously filling dish that leaves you satisfied but not stuffed. I was intrigued by an item called paella negra (black paella). I had never heard of it. The dish consisted of black rice (blackened with squid ink), calamari, shrimp and mussels. My wife ordered a more traditional paella consisting of rice, seafood and chicken pieces.

The first bite of my black paella was unimpressive. The taste was lackluster and uninspiring. I continued eating, and the thought of eating road millings entered my mind. It was apparent that the natural ink used to taint the rice also had a homogenizing effect on the taste of the calamari, shrimp and mussels. It was almost impossible to distinguish the taste of the different ingredients of the paella. I sampled some of my wife's paella, and it was OK. (But I've had better.)

After we paid the COP$ 80,000 ($43 US) check... my wife and I felt "let down" and disappointed. Will we give El Barral another shot? Perhaps... but no paella negra!

I visited with my wife and a friend. They have an extensive wine selection. Specializing in Paella, they produce a variety of different Paella. We chose the Negra, shrimp, mussels, calimari, surimi black rice, delicious! On the Friday nite we were there, many tables were reserved, so it may be best to make a reservation. The space is a former spanish colonial style home, wonderfully designed and decorated. Service staff are knowlegeable and efficient and able to keep up during a busy dinner. We will return again, with friends.
