We have just returned from another excellent stay at the Blackaddie Hotel. This was our fourth visit and we will definitely be going back. Everything about the hotel, restaurant and service is top class but the food is absolutely stunning!
The hotel is located in a quiet picturesque setting in Dumfries so if you are looking for rest and relaxation this is the place for you. Ask Jane, the co-owner, for directions for a lovely walk taking in countryside, the river and waterfalls, oh and a few sheep on route! The hotel itself is very traditional and has a lovely bar with an open fire which was very welcome last week!
I had arranged for my wife to experience the “Chef for a day” offered by Ian McAndrew, co-owner, and an amazing Michelin star quality chef. She had an absolutely wonderful day learning some of the tricks of the trade! She enjoyed the experience so much that she wants to go back again! This is not a ‘play at it’ type of experience but a working kitchen where even though only in the kitchen for a day you are taught to cook foods that are used in the for service after assisting to create that day’s menu. We eat lunch together which my wife had cooked under Ian’s guidance, and it was lovely. An excellent haddock risotto with a freshly cooked parmesan bread roll. She then had a break and went back later to plate up the starter for the evening meal. Yet again Ian surpassed himself with tastes and textures which worked so well together. How on earth he can develop and create unimaginable food combinations and still be so passionate after all these years is truly amazing. We can honestly say that we have not eaten better food anywhere and we have travelled extensively in this country and overseas. Oh and the parsnip ice cream is to die for!!!
Added to the lunch and evening meal, Ian also produces the best breakfasts we have tasted with an extensive choice on the menu and the freshest ingredients. Add to that lovely friendly service from Jane and her staff and you can’t go wrong.
A superb experience from beginning to end. We cannot recommend Blackaddie highly enough and we will be back soon! Thank you Ian and Jane for making our stay so memorable!
