Just returned from a weeks trip to lake Garda based at the Sportsman. Had a really great time. Good location, good lakeside walks. Great staff and very good food. We had a lake view room and half board. I have MS and pre arranged that they would lend me a wheelchair for the duration of our stay......which they did free of charge. Nice!

From the time you check in you are made to feel that this is your home for the duration of your visit and nothing is too much trouble. All the amenities are explained and the benefit of a free shuttle bus which runs to the center of Bardolino. We enjoyed an excellent dinner in the restaurant presided over by Michaila, the maitre d'hotel who is a joy to meet as she genuinely cares for her guests and this enthusiasm is also reflected by all her staff. She is also there at breakfast greeting all her guests individually being just as attentive and helpful, she will go far in the hotel business. There was a terrific barbecue in the garden on Thursday and at 27 Euro great value organised by.........guess who!
Really an enjoyable place to stay.

Room Tip: Overlooking the Lake although the rear facing rooms are cooler.

We were looking forward to our visit to Lake Garda, and the short stay at Sportsman Hotel. The check-in went well and the car-park was adequate. We went for a walk along the lakeside in the direction of Garda passing tranquil camp sites, but also music bars on the beach which were awful. It was pretty hot, and Garda just seemed like anywhere in Italy. We turned back and walked into Bardolino to get boat timetables for the following day.The walk back and forth to the port was around half an hour each way.
The view from the hotel of the lake was a bit disappointing as this is the widest part of the lake, and there is a haze that kind of blurs the horizon. We had a lake view room which was a bit dated, but adequate. The beds were very soft, to the point that we had backaches in the mornings. The food in the restaurant was only average, but the maitre'd was superb in recommending good wines from the region. The hotel has it's own beach area with loungers and parasols, but we didn't go there.
A point that the hotel might benefit from, is that the lift can be accessed by guests that have just left the water/beach and is carpeted. There is often sand in there and occasionally there is a smell of damp. This might be remedied by replacing the carpet with a more suitable material, or putting a shower facility outside before guests enter the hotel from the beach.
There are many prettier places to stay other than between Garda and Bardolino, but I suppose many folks simply stay nearby.
On a side issue, the boat rides didn't really seem to be "joined-up" and as such we took the car all the way round the lake and saw many more things than we would have done with the boat.It was around 175km round the lake, but well worth it.
We probably wouldn't stay at Sportsman again, but probably wouldn't re-visit Lake Garda either.

Dear guest,

we are very sorry to read your negative review on our hotel and the services offered, especially as far as our location is concerned. Certain critical comments, e.g. regarding sand in the lift and a hazy view are not even worth a comment, but rather evoke an incredulous smile. The hotel has a quiet location by the lake and the neighbouring towns are within easy reach using our free shuttle bus service.
The natural beauty and landscape, the food, culture and hospitality of Lake Garda are greatly appreciated by millions of visitors, but of course, this is not an obligation.
We leave it to our future guests to evaluate our work and recommend guests who are "bored easily" to spend their holiday somewhere else.

Have a nice summer.

We spent another wonderful week at the Sportsman at the end of June, having previously stayed there in 2009. We had requested a high floor room overlooking the lake and this is exactly what we were given. The room was spacious, clean and fortunately the A/C worked well as the temperatures were well into the 30s.
The hotel is quiet, situated right on the lake and provides a courtesy bus several times a day to Bardolino but they will take you to Garda as an alternative if requested. For those who are able, the 20 minute walk to either town is a pleasure with plenty of bars en-route if a rest is needed.
For the first 3 days my wife did not think the food was as good as our previous stay but by the end of the holiday we both agreed that overall it had been very good.
There is no doubt that the best asset of this hotel is its staff with everyone from the courtesy bus drivers to those working in the bars and restaurants being so friendly and helpful. I could mention specific people but really there are too many to praise. However, Michaela the maitre de in the restaurant deserves a special word of praise (thank you).
I do have one very minor note of criticism. On our day of departure we were being picked up at 7am and the hotel provided a packed lunch as breakfast did not start until 730am. We were given a small carrier bag containing some sandwiches, fruit, soft drink and a pastry which was disappointing compared to the food we had received during our stay. Some other travellers staying in other hotels said that they had been provided with their normal breakfast at 630am, a much better idea.
Overall a great week and hopefully we will be back to the Sportsman sooner rather than later.
Lake Garda is such a beautiful place to holiday. I would urge anyone who has not been to give it a try, you will not be disappointed.

Room Tip: Rooms overlooking the lake cost more but are worth it for the view. However, they do not have a balcony to sit and watch the lake activites

Just returned from a weeks holiday at the Sportsman Hotel on Lake Garda.
I cant praise the staff enough for their friendliness and quality of service.
With out doubt the best value for money break we have had in a very long time.
The hotel is ideally situated between Bardolino and Garda and either is reached via a lovely walk along the lakes edge.
I highly recommend the half board option as the food is of excellent quality.

Room Tip: Room with a Lake view
