There are many points of pilgrimage for geologists who wish to study Elba Island, and the Hotel da Pilade exceeds all reasonable expectations in providing for such groups. Not only are there good accommodations (with lovely views of surrounding terrain, healthful airflow, and firm mattresses for sound rest after a long field day), but three square meals a day to fuel the field studies -- however, good physical work should be done so that one is prepared for the fantastic 4-course evening meal, followed by a wee grappa on the veranda, afterwards. It is possible to arrange "un sacco al pranzo" (sack lunch) for each student during field work, so that groups have the flexibility to not have to interrupt field work at lunchtime (or, on a lovely day at Punta Zuccale, simply to enjoy a midday break right at the beach). The Hotel is centrally located for famed geological destinations of Elba: incomparable detachment fault exposures, economic mineralization for which Elba is famed, contact metamorphic zones, exotic skarn mineral assemblages, and laccoliths. When 'classroom' time is called for, there are chairs and patio area next to the large swimming pool, that in every way enhances a geological lecture. For those who are doing extended field work or having a family holiday along with the field science, there are apartment style accommodations with a kitchenette. It is the friendliness and generosity of the staff and incomparable host, Mr. Arduini, however, that make the Hotel da Pilade a destination location for the geology of l'Isola d'Elba.

Picture perfect. The view out of the door and windows looks out to the castle on the hill, which is lit up at night. The rolling hills are at your doorset - just beautiful.
