Trip to Cassino and history

4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 28 Jul 2024via mobile
Very comfortable close to downtown and dining but, far enough to avoid the bustle great view of the abbey and castle hill…lobby is like a small museum of the battle and the management is a wealth of knowledge and very accommodating to needs of the quests

A very very welcoming hotel, with a family-run feel and such helpful hosts - nothing was too much trouble for any of the staff, and everyone was ready to give helpful advice or directions. For those interested, the proprietor gives a very interesting talk on the history of the town and the abbey and the battle, and can help visitors from every nation to understand the role of the different nations and the perspective of the local population (which includes his family). There is also plenty of advice on what to see locally and walks to do. The hotel is very convenient and central to the town, 20 minutes walk from the station, and close to plenty of places to eat (which the hotel staff will help to recommend). Our room was very comfortable, well equipped, and had a wonderful view of the abbey.

I will review in two parts, the Hotel and the Walking Tour called Footprints on the Battlefield trails of Monte Cassino which was linked to the Hotel website and upon arrival I found out it was run by the hotels owner Pino.
I had booked the tour on 13th April five weeks before my arrival and a Military Tour was my sole purpose of visiting Cassino.
I was dismayed to have my tour cancelled by text 18 hours before I was due to go on it, PIno cited an anniversary event and a school twinning event both of which I find hard to believe he was unaware of 5 weeks previously when I booked.
By virtue of the internet I was able to find another tour at half the price which met my needs.
I was given an immediate refund which was in my account the next day.

This is a budget hotel and the state of decoration reflects that.
Checking in was easy and we added breakfast to the room price.
We had booked a twin room and found a double bed and a single bed, more of a family room and the smaller bed did not have any sockets or light switches next to it.
There were broken tiles in the bathroom and door knobs falling off some cupboards.
There was a good size balcony which needed a couple of chairs, and there was a great view of the Abbey.
Breakfast was very nice with a good typical continental selection
    There was a lift.
In reception there is an interesting display of military memorabilia.
The hotel is a 10 minute easy walk from the station.
    WiFi was free.
On a general note there is very little of interest to do in Cassino and on reflection I would have taken a day trip from Rome

We booked this hotel as it was in a good location in the town and more importantly for us Pino the hotel owner has utterly amazing knowledge of the battle around Cassino during WW2 and could not have been more helpful with regard to information. Our main reason for our trip was to visit the battle sites and cemeteries.
Our rooms were air conditioned with a private bathroom with shower.
The Italian buffet breakfast was very good and we certainly enjoyed the pastries.
All the staff were friendly and happy to provide maps and tour guides, along with allowing us to gain information from the vast library of books on the battle .

It was also a short walk from the hotel to catch the minibus service to Monte Cassino Abbey.

Room tip: Rooms at the front get a bit of noise from the morning traffic

It was very poignant to meet with Pino Valente who is working to explain the wartime events of Monte Casino to local schoolchildren and worldwide visitors in a spirit of mutual understanding and reconciliation. The hotel is a museum that informs and educates and is highly recommended. Pino keep up the good work and we visit again.

Best Hotel If you like history . The owner is a historian and did an evening presentation in three languages about the Battle of Monte Cassino and towns history. They serve a lovely breakfast buffet included in their very reasonable price. The room was comfortable and had a view of the abbey on the hill. The owner Pino and his wife Lina were attentive and friendly. We stayed an extra day because it was such a great experience. This is not a tourist destination so not crowded and mostly local residents.
