Our check in was fine. The receptionist was pleasant and well meaning, though her response to the direct question,"what time is checkout" came to haunt us the next day.
The room was fine, though the skirting boards were loose on one of the walls and almost falling off. The mini-bar was adequately stocked but there were no glasses and no bottle opener. First call to reception! We curiously, had only one robe in our junior suite. Even more curious, was that our travelling companions (in a different junior suite) had no robes at all, but they did have glasses and a bottle opener.
The bed was reasonable, if a little delved in the middle. It was actually two old singles pushed together with an alpine ridge separating the two.

Breakfast is chaotic! This hotel needs a restaurant manager more than anything. There is nobody to greet you at breakfast and guide you through the process of tea / coffee etc. The whole thing is done on a buffet basis. The very large dining room is served by one self serve tea / coffee machine even though there was a truly magnificent espresso machine on an industrial scale laid substantially un-used and unattended. The queues at the machine were large and frustrating. The croissant ran out, the cakes ran out and neither were replenished for 20 minutes +. The peaches in syrup had an unhealthy feeling fizz at the back of your throat as an after taste ~ clearly passed their best.
We spent the morning enjoying Grado looking forward to the 14.00 checkout as explained by the receptionist.
Heading back at 13.30 to collect our already paked bags from our rooms, our companions were challenged at reception that we needed to pay for an extra night due to missing our 11.00 checkout. OK we pleaded our case and were granted a stay of execution on this one but it was an ugly moment in an overall mediocre experience.
All in all. Grado ~ great place! Grand Hotel Astoria ~ look for an alternative!

Room Tip: Sea views are nice

Our 'Junior Suite' was spotlessly clean. The staff were all friendly. Free bicycles whenever we wanted them was a definite bonus. The two pools were excellent although the water was too hot in both. The food. was good with lots of choice. No negatives at all. We will return.

This hotel is in a good position. At the front of the hotel, on the fourth floor; I had a balcony with sea views to the left and right; unfortunately a large hotel in front spoiled the direct view. The room was very clean with a TV/ plenty of toiletries and towels [not fluffy] and was well lit . Short falls were firstly the over bath shower. The bath sides were very high and the shower spray positioned exactly opposite the sliding doors. There was no thermostatic control so the temperature had to be fiddled with while standing in the bath and it was unstable as other people turned there water on and off.Secondly, common to many European hotels there was no kettle or beverage supplies [but a very full minibar]. The bed was a bit hard for me but warm enough. The worst problem with the rooms was the thin walls . I could here my neighbour sneeze and cough - and I wear two hearing aids! TV volume was obviously a problem...... Breakfast was OK. Coffee/ tea was a problem; we were expected to queue and use a single machine which caused a long delay with two tour groups. There was a cappuccino machine but only the most senior member of staff seemed trained to use it- more delay. The orange juice was horrid; 'drink' 50% from concentrate with added sugar and sweeteners [ I saw the carton] . The young staff seemed unsure: We were expected to put scraps in a large pot on the table but when this was overflowing no-one emptied it. The concept of table clearing and re- laying had clearly not been taught.

The hotel has a great location, a little hidden from the main drag but still close to center.
Rooms are nice and comfortable
The breakfast room is adequate and seems at times a little crowded.
The pool area is practical. The roof pool was not open but looks spectacular.

Room Tip: Try Sunday to Thursday. Weekends seem very crowded

Grand hotel in fantastic location with lots of charm, the hotel retains the feeling of a time gone by with a few modern twists- the roof pool and wellness are great especially as we were the only people using them. Free bike rental and parking made a big diffrence. if you havent been to Grado parking can be a problem well worth noting. Central location with no traffic noise, steps from beach and main shopping area.
