Barbizon itself is a wonderful, picturesque village famous for the school of art and also for les weekends gallant and even for rock climbing on the boulders in the wonderful surrounding forests. The Hotel du Bas-Breau Is a beautiful comfortable welcoming country inn set in the heart of the Village. After a distressing day, escaping from the carnage and chaos in Brussels, the hotel was an oasis of calm and comfort. Our welcome at reception was first class. Our room, on the ground floor on the way to the pool and gardens was first rate, spacious and comfortable. We could almost hear the echoes of all the different people who have stayed here over the years from Mick Jagger to Javier Solana and even Depardieu. Perhaps if one listened really carefully one might hear the ghost scratchings of the pen of Stevenson who wrote Treasure Island there. A quiet drink in front of the log fire provided further relaxation. The menu in the main restaurant is excellent and reasonable priced. An amuse bouche of razor clams with herb butter and garlic was wonderful. The starters and mains were perfectly cooked. I know many people claim that portions sizes are too small in hotel restaurants. Perhaps my only complaint could be that the dishes were over ample. Most people would be very happy!
