Great budget, value for money hotel. We had a family room which was clean and had everything we needed for a stopover. Wouldn't want to stay longer than a night due to its location on a ring road but fine for a stopover. A few chain restaurants in walking distance. Eg buffalo grill

As you are no doubt aware, Stevieboy and I are keen cyclists and we were here for 5 nights from Friday - Tuesday in mid-July 2014. Along with many other guests we were there to do the Etape du Tour (yes it was very hard and yes we both completed all 145km through the Pyrenees from nearby Pau to Hautacam, thanks for asking).

Like many other guests we also hung around for a few days to watch the pro peloton suffer as we had suffered. We were also planning on having a lot of beers once our race finished, and also get up to some Abraham Lincolning, which as regular readers will know, is a double and simultaneous monkey-face.

The hotel is very close to the Pyrenees. Indeed, if you are due to cycle up a few of the big ones, as we were, the proximity is a little daunting.

From this hotel L'Aubisque, Col du Tourmalet, Port de Bales, Hautacam Col d'Aspet and several other landmark climbs are easily accessible by car+bike or just bike (for the hardcore).

The hotel itself is about 10 minutes walk from the city centre, on a roundabout by the main sports stadium on one of the arterial roads. Apparently, Tarbes' women's basketball team are pretty useful, although we didn't see them ourselves.

Those of you who will remember Niort-Buffalo-Grill-gate from the night before our arrival will not be surprised to learn that seeing the telltale white horns and red roof of the Tarbes "Buffalo Grill" over the road from the hotel was enough to make us jump in the air, scream and hug each other in the style of Scooby Doo and Shaggy. But having already passed the free cancellation window of 24 hours notice, we decided to give the TBI a chance. And good job we did.

It's a nice looking place, dark wood-panelling with Ivy growing on it, outdoor furniture and plenty of plants around the car park. It's simple, don't get me wrong, but it has a fair bit more about it than your typical Travelodge affair in Britain.

The service was generally pretty good but one guy excelled himself. A fairly short, very slim bloke with impeccable manners and an extremely likeable nature checked us in. He also insisted on speaking French when he saw I wanted to try. He refused to hurry me, correct me or complete my sentences even though we found out by the end of our stay his English was, like his French, much better than mine.

The whole transaction, including giving us wifi, refusing to take payment for more than one night at a time, telling us the way to a decent restaurant, putting our bikes in the safe storage room and giving us the standard brekky info, would have taken about 15% of the time it did if he had given in and spoken English.

The room was standard. It's a budget hotel. It wasn't a huge room, or luxurious. The towels were small, the soap smaller and there was no fridge, mini-bar, safe, wardrobe or swimming pool. There was no massage from a Swedish nurse or champagne on ice either, but the room was £20 each per night.

It did have free and functional wifi, superb air-con, fairly comfortable beds, the best shower we experienced in the whole of France (the hands-free nozzle holder in it was above knee height, for a start). Breakfast was standard but ok and 6 euros.

There is a supermarket right behind it, and bizarrely, the Quick Burger opposite was also surprisingly good once you get over ordering through the passenger window and having a drive through conversation in a foreign language. Here's a clue: it's the same; plat ou seulement le burger? Grand? Quel boisson? If you make it to town La Dolce Vita does good pizza and great Bolognese.

The only negative we experienced with this hotel was they once forgot to top up our bogroll and soap - this was a real negative with Steve's bathing and toilet habits. A quick visit to the trolley in the corridor soon solved that situation, as well as the we-both-forgot-to-bring-a-towel-for-after-the-ride situation.

Overall, the hotel was excellent. Look, if you want the Waldorf Astoria then don't come here. Maybe try the Waldorf Astoria. If you want to stay somewhere ok to good but extraordinarily cheaply then this is the place for you. Especially if you're in the Tarbes area.

Our man on the desk even let us off a couple of breakfasts because we hadn't been charged at the time. Good guy. Good place. Rock on Tarbes Budget Ibis.
