“A gem for kids in Ayrshire”

Kelburn Castle and Country Centre
Reviewed 27 May 2008

Kelburn Castle was a real treat for our 9 year old son. Located just south of Largs it is well signposted and easily accessible. This country park really makes an effort to be fun for families.

The park features a "Secret Forest" which is set in a mature rhododendron grove. The walk allows you to meander through well presented children's fairy tale settings such as Jack and the Bean Stalk, Hansel and Gretel and Little Red Riding Hood. Exploring this area is enjoyable for both kids and adults.

There is an indoor play area which my son said was the best he had ever been in (and that's saying something...!) Extra charge for the indoor play area. The large wooden outdoor play area was not given as high a rating although given the thumbs up too.

The excellent outdoor adventure trail provides rope bridges, rope ladders, tubes to scramble through and plenty of climbing, jumping and swinging. Recommended for 8 and up unaccompanied.

Each day features some activities - on our visit, the activites were "old-fashioned" games such as skittles and horseshoes. There is also a collection of birds of prey where the birds can be seen at close range. Some other small animals (chipmunks, rabbits, etc) also in pens.

Castle itsself is quite interesting to see with all of the grafitti. Gardens ok. Look out for wandering pheasants!

Plenty of woodland walks if more interested in walking and some waterfalls.

Trekking available but highly recommend booking in advance. On our arrival at 1pm, they were fully booked for the day.

We only scratched the surface that day. Overall, well worth a visit and certainly worth the entry fee. Higly recommend for the 2-12 age bracket. We'll be back!
