From the moment we arrived mid afternoon on Maundy Thursday everything was great. After a rest a game drive through the estate (just herbivores but including three giraffe) ending with a sundowner in the bush by a fire made by our guide. All very tAme but excellent if like us you have a baby on board or other reason not to want to push things to much . Horse riding on day two and a bracing hike up Rupurara Rock before breakfast on day three. Great to have scones with jam and cream at 4pm each day, wonderful views of breathtaking scenery including from our balcony , a huge bathtub with plenty of hot water. Altogether an excellent place to escape to with very friendly and helpful staff. You do need your own 4x4 for activities involving driving into the estate. Downside: a bit too easy to hear the goings on in the room next door and apparently only one music track in the restaurant (serving trout from the estate) which consisted mainly of awful Italian schmaltz.

This was my third stay at Inn on Ruparara over a period of ten years. I was unsure what to expect given the prevailing circumstances in Zimbabwe and the impact they have had on tourism in the Eastern Highlands of Zimbabwe. I was very pleasantly surprised and would not hesitate to recommend the Inn on Ruparara to visitors heading up to Juliasdale.

We found the staff at Inn on Ruparara to be very friendly and welcoming and the food was of a very good standard. The lodge we stayed in was very well appointed with excellent views. The bed was very comfortable, the bedding was fresh and clean and there was plenty of hot water. What else could we ask for?

Zimbabwe has a diverse range of offerings for the tourist and the Eastern Highlands really is a place that I would recommend highly. The Eastern Highlands embraces Juliasdale, Nyanga, Melsetter, Chimanimani and the Vumba and the area boasts numerous magnificent mountainous granite formations and wonderful forests and is renowned for its beauty. The area is distinctly cooler than the rest of the country and offers a very different range of activities. Only two to three hours from Harare, the Eastern Highlands is a popular destination for walkers, birders, trout fishermen and golfers. The golf course at Leopard Rock in the Vumba, about a thirty five minute drive from Inn on Ruparara, boasts, what can only be described as one of the most unique and picturesque golf courses anywhere in Africa. The views throughout the Eastern Highlands are magnificent.

Visitors to the Eastern part of the country in June to August will be exposed to a kaleidoscope of colour as the leaves of the indigenous Msasa trees transform and develop through a variety of reds, yellows, maroons, golds, browns, oranges, and greens over a few weeks. A wonderful sight to behold and photograph.

It really is a peaceful and very beautiful region to visit, the only drawback being the roads. The main road from Harare to Mutare is fine but if heading to Juliasdale you take the turnoff at Rusape and from then on the road is variable progressing to bad with some very significant pot holes so you have to have your wits about you. Many of the pot holes may be in shadow so are not always easy to see. I recommend using a 4WD.

The Eastern Highlands boasts some really beautiful hotels but regrettably due to a lack of tourism and hence lack of investment many are run down but they continue to do their best. The Inn on Ruparara is in my opinion one of the best in the Eastern Highlands at present and despite some very tough trading conditions has maintained a good standard. The Inn has 17 attractive lodges, with a capacity of 36 guests. Six of these are the Waterfront suites which overlook a lovely water feature just in front of them. The other rooms are called the Valley View suites and they offer guests spectacular views across the mountains and valleys.

I travelled back to Zimbabwe after 18 years away and was a bit uncertain of what hotels would be like. I booked into Inn on Ruparara and travelled the potholed road to Juliasdale/Inyanga from Harare, arriving at the Inn tired and a bit jaded. My family and I were very warmly welcomed by the gate security staff member who has the biggest smile imaginable. We then were booked in by Boven, the Manager who was very professional and friendly. We were shown to our rooms which exceed our expectations and had a breathtaking view of the kopjies and valley. We then enjoyed a lovely lunch, served by the most genuinely warm waiters and bar staff. This was only the start of what was to be a very special 3 day stay. There is a choice of activities - horse riding, hiking, rock climbing and fishing and all of them were enjoyed by the members of the group. The groom in charge of the horses is an exceptional horseman and knows the terrain very well so my daughter and her boyfriend went on several horseback safaris and had up-close encounters with game. They also went trout fishing and visited the local trout farm. Nothing was too much trouble for the activities staff. We enjoyed the friendly and knowledgeable service of Cletos the barman and the special attention given to us by Wellington, Trymore and David who are long-serving waiters. We also enjoyed the services of Charles, the other manager. The colonial style menu was wonderful and the little special touches the Chef made was much appreciated. We were also charmed to find our hire car beautifully cleaned on our day of departure by 'Madala' who tends the garden. The setting of this hotel is pure magic - built upon a crop of rocks overlooking a majestic valley. One is gobsmacked by the beautiful views. Wifi is problematic given the surrounding rock hills and the sporadic power cuts. But the setting makes up for any technological shortcomings. Our only wish is that the swimming pool was functional but given the severe drought facing Zim we understand reasons why this was not so. We were sincerely sad to leave and say goodbye to a special team of people who showed us what the true spirit of Zimbabwe is all about. The owners of Inn on Ruparara can be justly proud of them. I highly recommend this special place to all visitors to northern Zimbabwe. You won't be disappointed.

We called in to Inn on Ruparara for an extra couple of nights following a wedding nearby. The Inn is hidden along a 4x4 suitable road but once you arrive is truly a great little hotel.
We enjoyed the service, the rooms, the food and the activities. Like many places in the Eastern Highlands there would always be a case to make for a new coat of paint or a little extra maintenance, but of the places we saw while visiting the area - this place stands out. We paid around $300 for dinner bed and breakfast for 2 nights.

Room Tip: All lodges have spectacular views - I heard lodge 12 is the best. Our lodge (18) had a plumbing prob...
