Kesar Bagh was hands down the best place we stayed in our three weeks in India – beautiful location, incredible room (we were the only guests there so were “upgraded” to a huge suite), great staff, and the most delicious meals we ate anywhere in India. We were delighted to have all our meals there! local activities were also great, particularly the train ride from Jojowar to Phulad, where the local riders were a lot of fun.

The owners and staff were really attentive and friendly. Nothing was too much trouble. We thoroughly enjoyed the food which was served to us in a variety of locations culminating in a candlelit dinner on the terrace above the detached villa to which we were kindly upgraded.

Other reviewers have said it all: it is a very tranquil spot and well off the beaten track. All the food was delicious. The staff could not have been more helpful and our visit was enhanced by attention from the owner and his daughter-in-law. We had lovely clean cavernous rooms and bathrooms, with every mod-con, and all worked. We were loaned binoculars to watch the kingfishers working the adjacent pond. A fantastic spot if you are en route from Jaipur to Udaipur, we wish we had stayed longer.

The hotel is a heritage building, comfortable large rooms and excellent food. However, having travelled around India before I was dismayed that our tour brought us to such a remote place. The villagers were friendly and did not mind being photographed, but the ride on the local train was more of a time-filler than interesting - the scenery was the same all along and although it winds up to the top of the plateau as a train ride it was not spectacular. If you just want to chill out and the weather is warm, it would be very relaxing, but I had booked for a cultural tour and was expecting temples and history. It takes a whole day to get there and all day to move on to Udaipur. You might like to fill that time with more fulfilling activities.

The owner is one of the former royal families and is keen to provide a good experience - but check the location, activities and especially the weather before booking. Some tours include it to provide "local experience" even in the cold winter months.

Ladies - beware the manager !! He grabbed me by the shoulders before I could move and kissed me Happy Christmas! I thought, impertinent but harmless. Next evening he was waiting outside my room - when I very sharply asked what he was doing there, he said he was putting the lights out! Our GA guide said that there had been a previous "misunderstanding" but nothing seems to have changed.
