Competition keeps the business sharp and what happens if there is no competitor hotels in Hoogeveen, a city of about 55.000 inhabitants,is what I experienced in this hotel. The only good thing was the way the desk-clerk helped me when it turned out they screwed up my reservation in the first place. Thank you for setting this straight, saved myself a trip to another hotel. But the real taboo in this place is the word Renovation. From the minute you get out of your car you already hope the inside looks better than the outside, it just looks so late 70's. But no, hallways all have a depressing atmosphere, the room has not been redecorated for at least 25 years, and as a frequent visitor of hotels, I know that at other places I get a lot more value for money for my 120 euros. No key-cards, but 25 kilo hotel keys, old carpets, cheap tv's, there was nothing appealing to the room. But what really got my blood boiling is the toiletpaper dispenser. In a hotel I want a lavishing experience, a feeling of luxury, of abundance. That hope is shattered the moment you see it, the cheapest thing of them all, please only use 1 piece of toiletpaper at a time. It is a small thing in practice, but it can so much ruin my experience. This is the hotel where time has stopped and there is no incentive to catch up. Another sad example is the little folder attached to your room-key, with an amazing offer for hotel guests, the mother of all coupons. If you decide to visit the other two hotels of the same chain in the neighbouring villages….yeah, people, live the dream….you get your second cup of coffee for free. Accompanied by about 120 conditions, but it just says it all. In the boring hours at this hotel it made me think of who I pittied more, the person who designed this coupon about 100 years ago, or the people who use the opportunity to get a second cup of coffee (having spend 5 times the amount of gas to get there). To round up the rest of my experience, staff okay, clean only so so, breakfast was good and a poor value for money. But beware, do not visit this hotel if you want more from a hotel than just a bed and some old furniture. I am never coming back here.
