Great room in amazing setting!

5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 26 Oct 2017
La Fenice is located in the hills among trees and farms. It's a great property with traditional old stone buildings. Our room was cozy and warm. The bathroom was clean and the shower had very good water pressure. We took a morning stroll around the surrounding fields and farms. Very nice!

The breakfast was good, with some local cheeses and meats, and a selection of cakes and preserves. Coffee is made to order on the espresso machine. Hit the spot on that cold morning.

The restaurant was closed that day but we were given a tour of the kitchen where the chef was preparing weekend meals. Smelled great and the hand made pasta looked wonderful. Would definitely like to go back and eat the food!

This was the worst place we have ever stayed in Italy. It was nothing like the photos in the web site which must have been taken either a long time ago or very very selectively. Our room was dark, dreary and not clean. There is 'rustic simplicity ' and just plain tired and past it. The food in the evening was good especially dinner on Sunday evening when local meats and cheeses were served. The breakfasts were poor with little choice and the cheapest options provided. The trouble is that the journey to get here is so long (although pleasant) that you are trapped. Otherwise we would have left immediately and gone somewhere else. The people were pleasant enough but that can't make up for accommodation that is well below any standard which one is paying for. Need to address the honesty of the publicity or do a complete overhaul to be fair to future guests. I don't enjoy doing bad reviews but integrity makes me write this in respect of potential future visitors.

This could have been a real gem of a place, tucked away in the beautiful hills south of Bologna...but sadly it is not! It was difficult to find as it is not signposted well at all, the pool area was nothing like the photographs on their website....the food was average and we found our rooms where 1km walk away from the main building........ The service was poor and there is absolutely nothing to do there..... So unless you are really looking to get away from it all since there is no telephone reception, no wifi, no tv, don't stay here!! The rooms were in an old renovated tower but the steps up where really dodgy & loose, the beds were tiny and very hard, the bathroom & shower were too small for an average size person and there were funny tea towels instead of proper towels..... Since there are no curtains and there is a cockerel living right under the window, don't expect to get any sleep past 4am in the morning.....

You won't go far wrong with La Fenice. It's a beautiful old farm built to withstand earthquakes judging from the breadth of the stonework and the logs used in its construction over 5 centuries ago. You get a massive room and can have a superb dinner of really authentic and delicious local food at a very reasonable price. There seem to be lots of family members around who cook, serve meals etc but it is mainly two brothers, especially Remo, with whom one interracts as he speaks good English. We also met a lovely Irish lady called Ann who runs a cookery school at La Fenice during the shoulder season and has a house nearby. It has a big swimming pool and is fairly easy to find plus the altitude makes it relatively cool in summer and at night. As I write this I am thinking of the delicious food and wine and the gourmet meals we had at no real cost compared to some very disappointing restaurant experiences near to main tourist attractions in Italy. What a gem this place is. Go there.

Room tip: Website is a bit confusing but all the rooms seem to be large and good quality.

The working farm is very pleasant, clean, and the service friendly. The rooms are well equipped. The price (just off high season) was extremely good value for half board. There is also a good swimming pool for children. The farm is over 800 metres above sea level, and so is cooler in summer.

But the food is what makes this place so very special, as unlike many Agritourismo farms, this one offers half-board as well.. This is italian food that italians would rave about too. All home-cooked, with fresh and mostly home-made ingredients. The secundi are, of course, very meat-based, so vegetarians might feel disadvantaged.

The farm also hosts a regular english-language cookery course in May, June and September. (Google "casa-lara.com). And there are some delights in the area for foodies. We loved the visit to the local creamery to see the Parmesan Cheese being made, for example.

My wife and I just returned from a three-week vacation in Northern Italy. We stayed at La Fenice for two nights, and found the experience to be one of the highlights of our travels.

Remo is the owner and operator of this wonderful ruin that has been restored for the convenience of today's travelers. It is located about 45 minutes from Bologna, high atop the hills surrounding the city. The drive to the top involves curving roads along a pastoral setting that delights the eyes and the senses.

Our accommodation was a newly constructed building not far from the ancient ruin that houses the restaurant and the reception area. We stayed in what can only be described as a two-story fortress with wooden floors and antique furnishings that permitted panoramic views of the entire area. The peace and quiet of the accommodationi afforded us an opportunity for two nights of restful and undisturbed sleep.

Breakfast and dinner are served in the ancient building that also serves as Remo's office. This building, with its adjoining banquet area, swimming pool and veranda, is the focal point for guests staying at the Agriturismo as well as for locals who wish to stop by for a meal or gathering.

The food is prepared by Remo's friends and employees who live on or near the property. There is a family quality about the entire dining experience that is undeniable and rewarding. The quality of the food and the unexpected elegance of the dining area compares to a four or five star restaurant. And to dine in a building whose basic structure dates back more than a thousand years is memorable and impressive enough for that reason alone.

It is Remo's hospitality and generosity that provides icing on the cake for any visitor or guest. As well, his daughter Carla is available to assist in the restaurant and at breakfast, and to otherwise help those like my wife and me who only speak English.

This is the perfect spot to relax and unwind away from the fast pace of places like Bologna and other nearby cities. At the same time, it is close enough to the Autobahn to provide easy access to the many other inviting locations a typical visitor would want to consider.

Congratulations to Remo for offering such a unique and unforgettable accommodation for travelers who wish to experience the real essence of mountain top living in such a beautiful area of Italy.
