We had booked this hotel after seeing the pictures but the room we had was far removed from it. The check in itself was lackluster and the hotel was not at all busy we could see that but still the room we got on the second floor of the ‘new’ wing left much to be desired. It looked dated, worn and tired and needs upgrading ! Even the kettle chord did not reach the table as the picture below shows. The twin beds were too small and too soft with not much support. The only saving grace was the good meal we were served for dinner and the breakfast was good too.
We Won’t recommend this hotel

I regret that your room was not to the expected standard. We do in general get very good reviews on all room categories, incl "Historical"and "American". However, we are happy to hear that service and restaurant/food met your expectations. Thank you for your comments and welcome back.

The hotel was a wonderful place to stay mid-way through our "Norway in a Nutshell" journey. The staff were friendly and most apologetic that the lift wasn't working between the 3rd and the 4th floor - it was not their fault there had been power issues the night before.
Dinner was included as was breakfast. Both meals were good and the waiters most helpful. The food was a great example of local produce and Norwegian culture.
The room was spotless and the view from our balcony lovely. The architecture, both old and new, was fabulous and the hotel was a gem in an amazing Valley.
All together the hotel was a wonderful place to sit and reflect on the beautiful scenery and trip of the before we undertook day 2.

I would not recommend this hotel since we found it dark and gloomy. It definitely needs a renovation. The room we had felt like it was last updated in 1980! The staff was pushing the overpriced dinner buffet, but instead we ate in the hotel down the street. It had a lovely dining room, and we enjoyed an excellent meal. I would recommend staying there too, instead of at the Fretheim.

the hotel was nice, check in was fast and the girls were very friendly, they were busy as we all arrived at once from the ferry we were lucky that our room was ready and we didn't have to wait like a number of other people.

Dinner was included in our package, and when we arrive at the dinning room the maitre d' or head waiter was polite until her realised were where "pre paid" then his whole attitude changed and he became rather rude and sat us in the middle of the restaurant and there we sat for 15 minutes till we had to ask for a drink. It is often the restaurant that lets the rest of the hotel down and this one defiantly left us feeling annoyed.
