We stayed at the Mauna Kea in February and the hotel was relatively quiet. I cannot imagine what it will be like going forward from here. We also stayed with Bonvoy points and at the time, the going rate was about $500 a night. I have looked at prices in July and the nightly rate is $1200!!!! Overall, the huge highlight of this property is the tremendous beach. Arguably one of the best beaches in all of Hawaii, this is a beach that has it all- sunbathing, swimming, snorkeling, boogie boarding, etc. The hotel itself has wonderful history and great architecture. Yet, the rooms are dated. They are in need of an upgrade and do not compare to any other $500+ a night properties we have stayed at worldwide. For example, the bathrooms are small and not well lit- no bathtub in many rooms. The rooms feel like they could be a much cheaper beach hotel elsewhere. The restaurants and other amenities at the Mauna Kea were solid, but not great. The food was pricey and not that great, except for breakfast. Breakfast was top notch! Also, has a note, you most likely need a rental car for the this property. There is not much within a 5 mile radius. Overall, the Mauna Kea seems to be resting on its laurels and depending upon a tremendous beach to carry it. I don't think it is worth $500 a night, let...More
