Meroma Beach has a younger crowd, smaller restaurants (requiring longer waits) but better service and food, tips go far, alot more fresh seafood, much better outdoor lunch buffet, friendlier staff(everyone should have Pablo at least once), minimal nightlife except for small crowded enclosed disco, grounds quiet after 2200. Great beach!
Silver Sands has older crowd 40 - 50 even older but more nightlife with live bands playing 70's rock which all there enjoyed. People up until bar closing at 1:30AM every night. Had an indoor lounge/disco but why be inside? It was mostly empty. Exact same restaurants but larger( wait for Hibatchi grill only) slower service and minimal seafood mostly grouper or salmon good but slow service can ruin any meal. Tips? Staff looks for them but I don't think it matters much. Beach rocky and weedy but you can walk miles.
Being a young 50 year old I enjoyed SS for activities, meeting and talking with people my own age, even all those hockey fans from CA, nightlife was great but they need to open Oceana or Seaside for breakfast too like Maroma even though the breakfast buffet is excellent it's nice to enjoy the weather. If service at restaurants would improve I'd give up the great beach for the nightlife and go back to Silver Sands.

Our impressions of Secrets Silversands differs from others. We have stayed at 5 different top rated all inclusive resorts in mexico so i believe my views are a well informed basis for comparison but are from an English perspective.

We found the resort to be funky and chilled out with a younger, more moden feel than most adult only All Inclusive I’ve been to in Mexico. Cafe del mar music is played round the main pool and was not appreciated by older travelers. However there were plenty of smaller quieter pools to escape to.

The entertainment team were supurb, worked so hard to provide activities for those willing to participate. We did vollyball, pool aerobics, kitchen tour, games. Could have done table tennis, darts, bingo, cooking/dance/ spanish lessons ect. so no need to be bored! Dont forget that the point of AI is that you can completely relax and dont have to leave the resort for anything, therefore it shouldnt matter that its not near a town, if you want to go out clubbing every night stay on the strip in cancun. You really could do as much or little as you wanted. Fabulous quality throughout all aspects of the resort -- i wont repeat eailer praise. Excellent spa - best massage of my life. Beautiful beach but water is too shallow to swim, Take a walk along the beach to the left if you want to swim in the sea or snorkel, its great maybe 300 metres along (watch out for the nudist resort lol).

The trip with the entertainment team to Coco Bongo is a highlight. Although the entertainment at the resort is top notch too. 930 every night is show time followed by a live band.

Staff were very accommodating to special occasions. My partner informed them that it was my birthday, so they delivered champagne and a personalized cake in the evening, and turn down made me a towel "cake" decorated with flowers. For super star treatment - The wine cellar in Bordeaux can be reserved for a private dinner. We were treated like royalty and the only additional cost was having to purchase a bottle of wine from the cellar (no big deal it was only £20). I would recommend this resort for younger couples or honeymooners, because of the music and untraditional/minimalist feel.

Other tips

Dont stay in buildings 5 or 6, these are near the generators and sewage treatment area (hence earlier complaints). Come on guys rivera Maya is not on mains drainage dont wine just ask for a different building, its the same in all large resorts!

Afternoon tea is served in the indoor bar from 4pm :0)

Go to coco bongo with the ents team!

Check the daily news letter for discount offers at the spa

Put your "do not disturb" sign up at all times, room service came early and the rooms are so sound proofed that the maid cant here you shout...so we got walked in on!

Beds are lovely and soft - a rare find in mexico

Its only 20 mins from the airport!

No restaurants have to be booked and they dont make you wear wrist bands - hooray.

Book a tepanyaki table in himitsu (only thing you have to book as space is limited) great show cooking and opportunity to make new friends. Queue at 5:30 outside to reserve a space at a table for the 6:30/7:30/8:30/9:30 sitting.

30 mins in a taxi to Cancun or Playa del carmen ($40 each way)

Any questions give me a shout

As I read some of the negative reviews, I wonder if these people were actually at the same resort I was. This resort is amazing! We have been to many AI resorts in Mexico and Jamaica, and this was our favorite so far.

Check in was smooth. No champagne but we didn't care. Luggage arrived at our room almost as soon as we got there. We booked standard rooms and our room was just as it is pictured. We had no view at all, but our friends were in 2216 and had an ocean view. [If you can get in building 2 with room numbers between 11-21, you will have ocean view without paying the preferred price.] Our room was cleaned timely every day and the fridge was re-stocked every day. Turn down service was hit or miss for us (our friends had it every night), but our activity sheet was put under the door every night regardless. The resort has very modern decor. I prefer a more Mexican feel, but we knew what we were getting when we booked the resort.

The pools are wonderful and the activity pool is heated, which was nice since the other pools were very cool. The beaches in this area are not as nice as other areas of Riviera Maya, but it isn't that bad. It was very windy every day that we were there, and the water was very rough, so we always had red flags. There was only one afternoon that people were actually in the water.

Food- The food was very good. We ate at the buffet every morning for breakfast and thought it was wonderful. Some days we ate lunch at Sea Side/Oceana and some days at the buffet. Both were good, but you order off of a menu at Sea Side/Oceana. One thing we missed that we have had at other AIs is a snack-type buffet by the beach. They did bring food out to you if you wanted though. We never had to wait to eat at the restaurants in the evening. Here is our rating of the restaurants we ate at:
Mexican-our favorite, ate there twice
Himatsu-Asian-ate at the show table and loved it. Show up about 5:30 and wait for the hostess to get you a reservation for dining at the show table for that evening. This is the only place you need a reservation for and only if you want to eat at the show table.
Mediterranean-Good
Italian-Very good.
We didn't eat at the others, and never ordered room service.
Note: Dress codes are strictly enforced. Men must have long pants and a collared shirt.

Drinks- Drinks were the best we have ever had at an AI. The used good liquor and would do whatever it took to get what we wanted. Beach and pool service were excellent.

Entertainment- We went to all of the evening shows. Some were good and some were not. Just leave if you don't like it. They had bands playing several nights by the Veranda Bar after the show was over. The rock band was awesome. Everyone young and old seemed to have a great time.

We were just there to relax, so didn't do any tours. We did take a taxi to Puerto Morelos one night to do a little shopping and to go to the Catholic Church for Mass. It is a quaint little town.

We like to try new places, but would go back to SSS in a heartbeat.

Had a great vacation1st week of February at Secrets Silversands, everything is convenient and an easy walk from any point. The grounds are kept up and the facilities are very clean and neat. The beach is tight but easy to find a spot on. Seven pools gave you plenty to chose from. We upgraded to an ocean view room which was a terrific decision. The room itself was fabulous with a clear view of the ocean and we listened to the surf each night with the slider open. Nice lounge on the deck of our room. The beach cats were fun to sail and you can kayak if you want all for free. The restaurants are all very attractive and different with their decor. Food was good no matter where we ate. The French restaurant, Bordeaux, was the best in our minds. Rudy our waiter went out of his way to make the two times we ate there a pleasant experience by recommending what he thought we would enjoy and he did a good job. We did tip but it isn't necessary. Secrets is about 20 minutes from the airport. The entertainment staff had us making sushi one afternoon in the restaurant Himitsu which was a lot of fun. This is an easy place to recommend to anyone. Adults only, was a point that we liked and there was a wide range of ages from all over making for a lot of interesting conversations, especially if it was snowing or really cold in your hometown which had most of us savoring the 80 degree temperatures and the sun.

My husband and I came here for our anniversary. We were looking for couples only and all-inclusive and stumbled upon this resort. We had our honeymoon at Sandals St. Lucia and loved it. We wanted to go to Mexico and since Sandals didn't have a resort there, we went with Secrets. We love swimming in the ocean since we don't live near one. The website did not indicate that the resort is on a natural lagoon so swimming is not permitted. That was a HUGE disappointment to us. There are plenty of swimming pools on the resort, but we personally were looking forward to swimming in the ocean. The other downside was that the rooms smelled like rotten eggs, which we later found out was due to sulfur issues. We stayed in a junior deluxe oceanview suite. The room was clean and gorgeous (exactly like the pics on the website). Eventually you do get used to the smell. It just hits you everytime you walk in from coming outside. The bathrooms were nice. The overall decor of the whole resort was trendy, contemporary, and classy. Pics on website are accurate. The other disappointment was that a woman under our balcony was laying out topless with the front of her breasts exposed. We notified the front desk 2 times and they said they would do something about it, but never did. It was not a sight I wanted to see everytime I went out on the balcony. The food was good at the restaurants, but the rooms service menu was mediocre. We took a trip to Chichen Itza and it was nice (long ride though!). We got a couples massage at the spa and it was nice. If you don't care about swimming in the ocean you could probably overlook the other stuff. I just wanted to be honest on here because I have traveled the world and heavily rely on people's reviews.
