Owner description: Bac ha Market Nestled in the northern hills of Vietnam exists one of the best ethnic markets in all of Southeast Asia! On Sundays, the ethnic minorities from the surrounding villages and hills come by foot, by motorscooter, by horse, and by water buffalow for their chance to socialize, eat, drink, smoke, get a haircut, and buy produce and meat for the next week. It is a blur of colorful plaids and stripes.

Not sure what all the hype is all about. It’s definitely lively and interesting but it’s not as unique as everyone makes it out to be. Also quite upsetting to see how the livestock are treated for trade.

Tasty and cheap food, however.

Good for a day tour but probably not somewhere you will pay a second visit.

Like much of traditional Vietnam it is a disappearing lifestyle in Bac Ha. I have travelled to Vietnam four times in the last ten years and made the effort to bring our kids here while these kind of places still exist. I promise you this is the rural Vietnam you are looking for. Enjoy the buffalo market, be surprised by the rest of the animals on sale, try some traditional corn or rice wine (straight from the lid of the plastic barrel), and so much more. If you love photography this is paradise for portrait photography and traditional lifestyles. The hill tribes gather here every Sunday. Make sure you come on a Sunday - arrive about 9 or 10am. We booked a day tour from Sapa with our hotel, Aira hotel in Sapa. I would not hesitate to do it this way. Excellent value for money and the lunch was fabulous. Our guide, Viet, and our driver were the best!

This sunday market offers a very interesting experience. The market is mostly for local H'mong people to come and trade their products. This also offer a great chance for tourists to take some amazing photos and understand more about the local life. Highly recommend.

We had an incredible time visiting the Sunday Bac Ha Market! We spent 5 hours exploring and eating our way from one end to the other.

There is a wide variety of local foods. We would sit down and sample food from one tent, walk around a bit, then sit down and sample some more. There is everything from fruits and baked goods to meats ranging from standard chicken to pigs tongue. You can be as simple or explorative as you like.

There are a lot of hand crafted goods to be bought. Be sure to haggle some. They raise the prices up expecting to negotiate the price.

We stayed in Bac Ha the night before. So we were able to beat all the Sapa tour buses to the market. The market begins around 6 am. We got down there at 7:30 am and were there until about 12:30. The tour buses start rolling in with lots of tourist around 11 am. So the market gets packed. If you really want to explore the market without dealing with too many tourist, I recommend staying in Bac Ha for the night and hitting the market early.

The Sunday market is a riot of colour, Flower Hmong people who make up much of the market wear very colourful costumes. Almost anything is sold here. The vegetable market has the freshest produce. The fish market has many different live fish options. Meat is a bit challenging.
Good fabric and knick knacks too.
The animal market is interesting with Flower Hmong buying and selling all kinds of animals. But animal welfare is not a concern here. Worst of all is the sight and squealing sounds of pigs being kept/put into plastic sacks - quite horrific
