Eight of us went to The Chequers for a mid week evening meal. Everybody (including a visiting Congressman from Michigan) thought the food was excellent. The American was particularly impressed with the Beef Wellington which he said was cooked to perfection. Notwithstanding the quality of the food, the service is still very "Pub Grub" rather than quality restaurant. Am I just old fashioned in finding the question "Who is having the steak?" not good waiter service? Good heavens you took the orders is it so difficult to make a note of who is having what?

Would I go again? Yes, but only if in the immediate area.

We like fish. But finding fresh fish at a restaurant miles away from the coast has always been a challenge for us. Specifically, skate is touch-and-go. It is a while since we visited the Chequers at Well and when an opportunity came up we jumped at the chance. It was a quiet mid-week lunch - only 4 or 5 tables occupied. Skate and plaice were both fantastic. They like serving with large juicy capers which we love. Service was no problem (only one person serving.) Now the tricky bit. It's not cheap. I'll let you decide whether £60 for 2 people (mains with sides, a couple of beers and coffee) is reasonable or not. We don't eat out much but this was worth every pound.

The kitchen really knows what it'd doing however the service needs improvement. Not everyone wants a full 3 course meal at lunchtime ! Sort it out and this place would be a winner.

Went with friends to celebrate a wedding anniversary.
Poor wine list, not permitted to take own wine and pay corkage, at the end of a good dinner the waiter was extremely rude to us, so much so that although it is local we will not be going there again.

Both the food and service here were outstanding. I am Coeliac and not only did they understand what was suitable and what wasn’t they could adapt dishes to suit. The addition of gluten free rolls was impressive.
