Review of The Vaults Cider and Ale House - CLOSED

The Vaults Cider and Ale House
Certificate of Excellence
Price range: US$9 - US$16
Description: The Vaults is Newark's first Cider and Ale House and is situated in old cellars on Newark's historic Northgate within walking distance of Newark Castle, the River Trent and the unique charm of Newark town centre. Newark is nationally recognised for many things including its role in the Civil War but one of the most exciting developments of recent years is that of the Real Ale Trail which has been embraced with enthusiasm by those who appreciate the quality of fine beers who are more than willing to support the huge growth in microbrewing over the last few years. The Vaults is owned by David and Toni Birch. David has spent his adult life developing his appreciation of Real Ales and has in fact spent many hours perfecting this appreciation at hostleries around the UK. For David however this has become more than a leisure pastime and he has been involved in running pubs and clubs for many years most recently as a Director of UK Bar Services Ltd (along with your author Toni) who provide mobile bar facilities for a variety of events throughout the country and in recent years have been providing bars at major Country and Game Fairs at prestigious venues around the UK. Working at these different venues has given us the opportunity to work with local microbreweries to provide great local ales in each area. Recently in response to demand we have introduced traditional Cask Ciders which have proved to be as popular as the Ales. In 2014 we were looking to expand in a different direction and these cellars had just become available. We had visited previously and fallen in love with this unique building so when we saw it was available it took a quick conversation in a pub garden (where else?) over a pint of Ale (what else?) to decide that this was the venue for us. David takes his beers seriously, training with Cask Marque and installing new cellar facilities to ensure that they are kept and served to the high standards expected of Cask Marque and the Campaign for Real Ale. We are also passionate about using and supporting local suppliers wherever possible and although we supply a variety of Lagers, Beers,Ales and Ciders to suit all tastes, our emphasis is on supporting those made in the traditional way with as few beer miles as possible. The Vaults is managed on a day to day basis by our daughter Amanii and her partner David (known as Dav, too confusing!) Amanii has helped out at UK Bar Services since she can remember, helping collect glasses and then as she grew older learned the business from serving customers to learning install of equipment, logistical management and running large individual events. Having met Dav in Leeds they both went to Austria in 2013 to the European Bartender School both graduating with flying colours. After more travelling they have now returned to run The Vaults back in Newark. Together we bring a wealth of experience, knowledge and passion about our town, our venue and our products that are the foundation of our business.

This is a small restaurant with excellent choice of cider and beer, with a good simple menu. Service was quick and helpful, well worth a visit.

The food was very good and the staff very friendly, the ambvionce was not to my taste as it was minimalistic and I like more comfortable traditional but overall a good experience

Fantastic food and drink, very attentive staff and lovely ambience. As a family we had sharing starters which were chicken skewers, pork belly and ribs all cooked perfectly. The fish and chips for main was crispy and fresh and lastly the puddings were all prepared on request and tasted delicious.

The Vaults is a great place for really good specialist ciders, and also real ales. The premises are what you might expect from the name - flagstone floored cellars, with brick walls and arched ceilings. The food is also good, and the staff are friendly. Highly recommended.
