Lacking in many Thai restaurants in CBR is aromatics, balance and chilli - this place - despite the tiny plastic looking plates, toilets elsewhere and sticky menus - BRINGS IT. Thin slithers of kaffir lime, lemon grass, fresh chilli, coriander. Yum. Busy for dinner so book. I recommend every dish we ordered - chilli lime scallops, crispy eggplant, crying tiger (top quality cut respected by minimal cooking time), red duck lychee curry, green chicken curry, salmon Nashi pear salad, soft shelled crab with papaya and crunchy skinned pork belly (well rendered #actually crunchy). Rice was a little over cooked, roti flakey like pastry. BYO $3 per person is ridiculous for a big group. But this place is a winner.

PROS:

Some interesting and delicious food on menu that’s a bit different to your local Thai in suburbs eg. Betal leaf topped with prawn & fresh herbs as well as a few other dishes which suit vegetarians as well as those, like me, who aren’t big meat eaters...my husband loved the Penang beef curry & there was plenty of veg in it as well for my liking. Staff are friendly & reasonably attentive (on a quiet Wed night); the decor is modern Asian/chic with noise levels ok perhaps due to v high exposed/painted industrial fixtures instead of a ceiling?...presume acoustics would be ok on a busy night too ie didn’t seem like 1 of those noisy places that hinder conversation. Quality/quantity of food was v good and priced slightly above our local Thai (a byo) - more due to it being licensed here. However beer & wine on offer ok prices too (wine $8 or $9/glass). We’ll return occasionally after shopping or before a movie - it’s below CBR centre & Dendy cinema.

CONS:

The flow of food was a bit odd as we usually leave the spicier mains until last - instead a curry dish was brought out before a “small plate” which we had anticipated as an entree. They may have just forgotten that small plate as it came out last - after a reminder from us. The staff don’t make enough eye contact to check all is ok - took us a while to get their attention but they were pleasant once we did - even if no apology or compensation for forgotten dish.

TO SUM UP: we would have rated Kinn Thai excellent if staff were more attentive & flow of food was thought out (think about asking them to slow it down if you’re not in a hurry on a quiet night). We felt rushed through as everything (except missing dish of course) came out very quickly. Not a place for a long, lingering evening but all v fast & fresh. Could suit those going to the movies or theatre afterwards as they seem to employ plenty of staff - management just need to train them to be more attune to customers’ requirements.

Booked a table of 7 for a family dinning occasion. Due to arrived there early we asked if we can sit on the tables outside wait till it opens. The lady who seemed like the manager or supervisor said no due to they were setting up tables.
I completely understand due to I had hospitality background and informed her we will not touch your table settings just need some chairs to sit till you open.
She said no and asked us to leave. I explained again she gave me the most terrible look and walked away. It seemed like she did not even want us to be here even though we made a booking there.
I gave it a cancel of my booking and ate at Jaime’s next door instead which was very enjoyable.
It is a great shame that Kinn’s got a such terrible supervisor/Manager to run who has no sense of hospitality and service. It used to be our regular dinning restaurant but will not be anymore.
Unbelievable!

This restaurant is crowded and gets pretty noisy. For Canberra standard is good local restaurant but compared to some of the larger cities, the standard of the dishes pretty average. The dishes are not very large but the cooking is definitely Thai. All the spices and flavoring definitely Thai. We had the Tom Yom soup and it was sour and delicious. The red curry and green curry tasted Thai. So did the basil fried vegetables and spicy egg plant. Wagyu beef salad was nice. Nothing from this restaurant stands out to rate a very good restaurant. The dish which they did well was the betel leaves with prawns where the crunchy dessicated coconut and other nuts, half a prawn and the spices was delicous. Overall was a pretty pricey restaurant since it is not fine dining with table cloth. It is more of a cafe style restaurant with cafe ambiance.
