Great location - walk away from Rocks... awesome view of the Opera house & water front. Enjoyed the stay in a cosy room.

Room Tip: Request for room with a view to Opera house

We arrived in Sydney early in the morning and we were offered early check-in at 10am. The décor of the room seemed rather dated and the size isn't exactly impressive, but you probably wouldn't concentrate too much on the inside of the room, considering the amazing view it offered, from dawn to dusk. The hotel offers everything that that you would expect of its prestigious brand including marble bathrooms, comfortable bed and … did I mention the view?

The location of the hotel is great with a short stroll taking you to the central shopping district. However, I probably wouldn't stay at the Four Seasons again when I am next in Sydney as the property lacks the uniqueness that other newer boutique hotels offer.

To develop the culinary theme a little too far, an underlying impression of this hotel is that, for the 4S chain, the hotel is a 'milker'. It is a tad tired, a worn, weary traveller but still with more work to contribute. The rooms (we stayed more than once) need significant refreshing. But they are very small for this class of hotel, and you wonder how much additional 'efficiency' can be designed in. There is already a lot of 'clever' design here, but .... the rooms are small and I am not. The hotel is small too, particularly when you view the neighbouring skyline; a dwarf among giants, and fully formed - not small in absolute terms but in comparison to its neighbours, like the Shangri La. Somewhat bizarrely the swimming pool seems to be constructed in the hard shoulder of the nearby freeway! But we like staying at 4S hotels and are the sort of stubborn guests these chains thrive upon.
It is just a lot easier to justify upgrading a bigger hotel, particularly the public areas. I haven't touched upon these yet, but the foyer is spectacularly under-whelming. And tired, almost apologetic. And yet the hotel fills up, charging high rates, so you just let it keep earning for you until it falls off the cliff. You milk it.
So why do people stay here? Reputation of the chain? Certainly. Corporate sheep behaviour? Sure.
The location is outstanding! Great views, though not from most sides, it sits right next to the Rocks area. Arguably it's on the Rocks (no pun intended), but not in that part that is the tourist trap/bustle and noise. But it is great for access to that part, and the opposite side of that patch of harbour on which sits the glorious Sydney Opera House, and more demure up-market spots to eat.
The service was as expected. Great. You can have the best location with a superb build on it, but without the standards of service, you have nothing. Apart from one contretemps with one waiter (I prefer to describe myself as assertive rather than unreasonable), we have had great and personal service here. I do have another particular gripe about the service. Specifically, at breakfast the staff is detailed to start setting up the tables for luncheon, well before breakfast was due to take last orders, re-positioning tables and ironing table cloths. This, rather than our first and most important meal of the day, became their basis of existence. This smacks of doing 'jobs' for the hotel rather than the guests who, at times , were left waiting and disturbed by nearby activity. At breakfast!! But the breakfast arrangements otherwise were very good indeed - not close to the Mandarin Oriental, Singapore that we had just left - but very good by any mortal standards.
BUT , and there are a few buts, I was intensely irritated by the absence of free wifi in rooms. The rates charged were usurious - totally unreasonable gouging! (Tip - if desperate and totally disenchanted with the prospect of paying $25 or $30 for a minimum WiFi charge at the hotel, take the Manley Ferry. Not only is it a great way to see the harbour for a handful of peanuts, but you get free WiFi. And a great beach.)
BUT, the hotel prices for such as alcohol - regardless of whether in bar or room mini-bar - bottled water, coffee etc etc are several steps beyond 'insult pricing'. You expect to pay higher prices in this hotel. You chose it, after all. But this was gouging, designed for corporate expense accounts, though I doubt that even Craig Thomson's card would take too much of this bashing.
BUT, we also had to consider dumping our underwear and smalls because to launder them would cost more than they cost to buy back in dear ol' Blighty, that is. Fortunately, we checked on local replacement costs and decided to fish the unmentionables out of the bin.
Why did I give it 4 Stars, not one? Because it is still a very good hotel due to its location and service standards. A place to sleep, breakfast, and eat and drink somewhere else. And find new ways to avoid Dhoby itch.

Room Tip: High room with full harbour view. You pay a small premium, but worth it for the first stay. After that, you simply get blasé about the view.

Great old hotel with best location.Fantastic harbour views from premium harbourview corner room. Staff universally pleasant and helpful. Room spacious and well appointed . Executive club is a good option for breakfast and relaxation. Kables restaurant could not be faulted for food and service.
