On a recent overnight visit to Sydney, we stayed at The Vulcan, a boutique hotel, in Ultimo. We hadn’t stayed here for a while but The Hughenden, our usual choice, required a minimum of three nights during the New Year’s period due to the Boxing Day cricket test at the nearby Sydney Cricket Ground. The Vulcan, near the University of Technology Sydney, was again a good choice at $160 for a standard queen room. It is close to the The Powerhouse Museum and within walking distance of the CBD and Darling Harbour. The nearby Entertainment Centre is being demolished at the moment. The standard queen room was roomy enough with a generous and recently refurbished bathroom. Windows are triple glazed for privacy and quiet. Comfortable and modern and it offers free Wi-Fi, which is a bonus for an Australian hotel. Staff were friendly and accommodating, even ordering a taxi on a rainy night to take us to the Opera House. The taxi arrived within ten minutes. That’s a bonus. In the past we had to walk up to Broadway and hail a cab. The Vulcan has a café for breakfast or you can wander up the street to Lush Bucket Café or down to Darling Harbour. There aren’t many cafés or restaurants in the Ultimo area. We parked our car in the nearby UTS car park at a cost of $20 overnight, which is a reasonable price for overnight secure parking (the parking is locked after 10pm until the morning) in central Sydney. It was arranged for and paid at The Vulcan, which made it convenient too. The Vulcan was a comfortable and convenient location for our needs and we would come back again.

We stayed over the new years eve period and found the staff very friendly, good location
but the room had no natural light and felt dark and depressing at $320 a night this is one hotel that i would not recommend. We also waited 50mins for breakfast which was pancakes and toast not worth the wait. A/C very noisy and did not work well; very small bathroom.

Room Tip: room with natural light and a/c that is not so loud

Booked this hotel for 3 nights for my family to stay in while they are visiting Sydney. Booked a double bed room expecting it to be a shoebox with no natural light but it was the opposite, lovely large double bed room with enough natural light and a lot of space for luggage. it was meant to be for my mom and sister but because of all the extra room all of us siblings and mother had a wonderful family bonding time. Would definitely recommend the place for Family stays. Close enough to the locality by walk or transport & lovely staff! Thanks to the latina lady at front desk, really hospitable. :)

The hotel itself is very basic and rooms are pretty small, but the location was fantastic. The place felt more like a room in an apartment building than a hotel. Service was friendly. Great value overall (so long as you manage your expectations accordingly).
