The view from the restaurant over Sydney Harbour is magnificent. The staff were very professional and helpful. The food was presented in an imaginative, modern way. The prawns, crab, salmon and bug dishes were all nicely prepared and tasty. On a busy night the tables are fairly close together making it a little noisy.

The mains are the size of entrees . The lamb was maybe 1-2 centimetres cubed. The snapper was 180 Gms ( per waiter) probably before cooking. The salmon looked ok in size. The quality was good. But such stingy portions takes away from a celebratory occasion. The place was full on a Monday so until people react I guess people will be treated to the same meanness.

For years, aeons ago, i inhabited the library below this eponymous eatery. Through the central open well the sounds of crockery and glass intermingled with mostly male hub-bub... it sounded expensive, corporate and out of reach. But now that i am a seasoned diner, the clarion call was alive and well, on an excursion to the cinema nearby. Choofed in by rail, we were ushered to a table by the glass windows, where the views sweep you off your feet. The ditty about a city girt by sea popped in my head, when you view the unbelievable panorama ahead with deep Bluewater everywhere, the Bridge and Opera House clear as mud. Awesome exposure.
We had a friend in tow, so the stand out dishes were: Wagyu Breslau, seared tuna, salmon belly tartare is decorated with jewels of salmon roe, bug tail,Shilo and dabs of lemon creme fraiche. The pan-fried John Dory cuddling with capers, olives and tomatoe was outstanding as was the carrot purée. Interesting combinations, very colourful and the eggplant with labne compliment the marguez sausage and lamb loin.
The dessert, macaroon crumbs nuzzle up to orange jelly and YU AU cream. Delicious. This venue and meal is worth remembering. We never stopped gazing towards the harbour panorama, which is spectacular even on a cloudy day.

This is a truly iconic and great restaurant with a stunning view of the Harbour Bridge and the Opera House. My preference is to visit over dinner and make a booking for outdoor sitting, so that you can let the magical lighting of the Harbour Bridge transport you to a magical world. A superb setting, Cafe Sydney is a not to be missed experience.

Hugely popular, it requires booking well in advance and simply doesn't disappoint either with the view, the outstanding service, excellent wine and out-of-this-world food preparations. All in all, on a scale of 1 to 10, I'd happily give it 11.

It was a warm sunny day, so where better to go for a surprise birthday lunch than a restaurant which offers alfresco dining overlooking Circular Quay.

Cafe Sydney is a large venue with plenty of space between the tables which makes conversation around a table easy because the ambient noise is low. The northerly breeze wafts in through large apertures. The ceilings and roof are high offering coolness.

The menu is modern and not too long. We started with a plate of Sydney Rock Oysters, had Tandoori Salmon for mains, and birthday cake for desert. We had sides of green beans and broccoli, and a salad of buffalo mozzarella and zucchini to share. They were all fine dishes. The beer and wine selections were excellent - I liked the Balnaves Cabernet Sauvignon 2012. (see photos)

The staff were friendly and efficient - you could be in and out quickly, if that is what you wanted.

It's not cheap, but dining with these views, should not be cheap!

It's easy to get to - a train to Circular Quay Station then across the road to the top level of the old Customs House.

We'll be back.
