Cockroaches

1.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 18 Dec 2018via mobile
I stayed for one night on the 5th floor at Luma Luma and couldn't wait to leave. The place is tired, filthy and there is no Wi-Fi in the rooms, only in reception. At night the cockroaches came out, they were everywhere and I had to move the bed for fear of them falling onto my head. They scuttled through my luggage and all over the kitchen and bathroom surfaces. The appliances were filthy and the fridge stunk the room out. The only nice thing to say about the place was the politeness of the guy in reception.

Thanks for your response, Cheryl.
Unfortunately cockroaches are an issue throughout the wet season.
However, at Luma Luma we strive to keep on top of this with regular pest control treatment, and will endeavour to continue this practice. We're happy to advise that we don't have too many issues of this nature in our establishment in recent times and the picture of the cockroaches you posted cannot be recognised as being from this hotel.

Stayed at Luma Luma for 4 nights and was very pleasantly surprised! The room was clean and comfortable with a good size bathroom, efficient aircon and handy balcony. The 24 hour reception made the stay enjoyable and safe. The complex is so convenient to everything in the CBD and the staff were very friendly and helpful. I'm a regular visitor to Darwin and have stayed at many of the hotels there. I'm very happy to recommend Luma Luma most highly.

The apartments are located quite close to the city center. Within walking distance to major supermarkets & all the eating places. There is a café as you walk into the reception, there is a café across the road & there is another around the corner.
Check-in went smoothly. There is a nice pool & BBQ area.
On entering our room, it was evident that there was recent work to repaint the room given the strong smell of paint fumes. It was so recent in fact that the enamel paint on the bathroom door was still tacky to the touch – it hadn’t hardened.
Our room was somewhat small & was very reminiscent of a 1970s Motel room. The walls were of that Besser brick type construction – in fact the whole building looked like it was constructed of Besser bricks. Our room had a balcony that overlooked the street, however the balcony was very small & due to the heat, it was impossible to sit there. Diagonally across the road a large multi-storey building was being demolished, which made it impossible to open the balcony door due to the noise. There was no wardrobe in the bedroom in which to put our clothes, but a rather small linen type closet near the entrance door – so we found ourselves virtually living out of our suitcase during our stay. Similarly there was no bedside drawers or bedside lamps in our bedroom. Instead there was a light on the wall immediately behind the bed, however the light switch was on the wall adjacent to the door as you walked into the bedroom. This meant that when you turned the light off to come to bed you were met with total darkness. The air-conditioner in the bedroom was located directly opposite the bed, so that it blew cold air directly at you, which was very uncomfortable. The overhead fan in the bedroom made an irritating squeaking sound so much so that it ha to be turned off to get a nights sleep.
The bed itself was vey uncomfortable – so uncomfortable that one night my wife slept on the lounge instead. The pillows were so soft that it was like sleeping directly on the bed mattress. We only had 3 pillows to share, so on one night one of us got two pillows to sleep on while the other only had one
The furniture needs updating, it looked like it was from a second hand store. The kitchen, dining area & bathroom need urgent & serious modernisation. The taps in the bathroom squeaked when you turned them on and off. The fridge froze things that were put in it. I turned the thermostat in the opposite direction, but this had no effect, things still froze if left in the fridge overnight – so I imagine that the thermostat needed replacing
There was no internal laundry or drier but instead there was a share laundry which cost $4 per wash & $4 for the drier. The machines only took $2 coins, no other combinations of coins
We were woken several times in the early morning with people yelling and swearing in the street – by the sounds of it, this was a regular event
To be frank, the daily rate was double what it should be. This really is BUDGET accommodation but charged at 1st class rates. We only stayed 4 days before we‘d had enough & checked out. My advice would be to stay somewhere else rather than here. Across the road is a bit more expensive but very very nice

Room tip: Choose a room away from the front street

Dear Sir,
For the purpose of your good reason, it seems like you were paid to stay here to carry out a thorough, detailed inspection for us, for which we are grateful.
You put us in a great light by confirming the obvious that our location is second to none in the heart of the city, together with the renowned Bens Bakehouse coffee shop downstairs, and the convenient locale of other cafes and restaurants around us.
We are also proud of your acknowledgement that our rooms have recently been painted, which is something that Luma Luma carries out frequently throughout the whole complex in upkeeping the standard and cleanliness of our rooms.
Hence why our hotel competitors around us are having trouble competing with us in the occupancy rates in the current depressed market.
Even though our rooms are slightly smaller, our competitors are only charging $5-10 more than us, but we are still having more regular return guests than they do.
This is simply because our personalised service with permanent staff over the years, compared to other establishments having a mechanical service in their system _ which most hotel guests value.
However, we will take all your comments on board to make good accordingly, and thanks again for taking the time to complete such a thorough report.
Hope all has been worthwhile for you.
Best regards,
Luma Luma Holiday Apartments

We experienced great service and enjoyed our stay in an appartment. Good big bed, clean room (kitchen and bathroom as well). Basic utilities in the kitchen. Airco and fan in the room.

Wifi was only available near the reception. We thought it was a small discomfort for a very affordable hotel.

Location: it was quiet yet close to the center of Darwin pubs and restaurants.

We traveled on a budget and they offered us a great deal for staying 5 days. Extremely good value for money. In addition, location is great and very easy to walk around the CBD. Room is spacious with balcony and kitchenette. In all very happy with our stay.
