My brother was unfortunately in a car accident so my mum, my sister and I flew up from Sydney to make sure he was ok. None of us had a lot of money at the time so we decided to stay at Base Embassy. We shared a room with a double bed and single bunk. The room was quite spacious for a backpackers, and was just around the corner from the bathroom which was good as I tend to get up a few times during the night.

It was very quiet when we stayed there and it was mostly women there at the time. So I would recommend this place if you are a solo femail traveler that isn't interested in the party scene. I personally would prefer to stay at Base Central as there seems to be a lot more happening there, but the rooms there aren't as nice.

The location is very good. In the middle of the center. The staff is very unfriendly. They keep you waiting for no real reason and not helpful at all.
We were lucky with our double room as it was situated at the end of the hall with an extra door separating our double room from the dorms. Our room was large, clean and quiet. The hallway with the dorms was noisy. Bathrooms were alright, a bit weird to have to use your access card for the bathroom.
Kitchen was horrible. Very dirty, not organized, only one fridge. People didn't seems to care to clean their mess at all. This is why we didn't cook here.

Arriving at reception, around 1:45 from memory, and being told we don't check in people for another 10 minutes was a rude start.

The person at reception essentially sat there, counted money, read something, got some water for herself and waited for her shift to end whilst the queue of people just piled up.

It wasn't until the next person arrive, who was actually really good, that people started to be served.

If rooms weren't ready, or they were understaffed, she was learning the ropes, etc. I can understand. Rather than not checking in people till my watch say so is pretty poor. Australian standards are slipping and here is a classic example.

Funny thing was one of the people waiting seemed to be writing notes in regards to what he thought of the lobby, information on display at reception, rates, etc. (Yes, I peeked at his notes. I was bored.) If he was a travel writer probably not a good scene to have walked in on.

It was also a hot and humid night. Talking to reception they had air conditioning remote controls, but they didn't know which one was with, could be this one, might be that one. They didn't know. Ended up being a hot and humid night in the room. Though the window did open, unlike the other reviews below, so they made it slightly better.

Room itself was clean, decent towels, space and all that. So points in that respect. Side tables, lamp, it was clean in the room. So actually quiet good in that respect.

But add to the cleaness, or lack there of, of the bathroom and it wasn't a good stay. I wouldn't be back.

The room in this hostel was a good size and was clean. We booked a private room without bathroom.
The bathrrom was also very clean. The staff however were not good. They were not friendly at all and did not offer help.
We stayed at the hostel for the ashes and it was in a good location in the centre of the city.
The bed was not too comfy, my partner and i did not sleep too well!
You get what you pay for and this is ideal for travellers just looking for a bed.
The laundry room was small but adequate and the same goes for the internet room.

Very good hostel right in the CBD of Brisbane. The Rooms and Bathrooms are clean and airconditioned. The well equiped kitchen is big and clean, balcony included. There is a TV Room, a computer room and a rooftop terrace, perfect for meeting for a few drinks. The Staff is friendly, many of them are backpackers as well, so nobody really complains if it gets a bit louder on the rooftop at night. The hostel is not too bid, not too smal, just a good size to get to know some people. I stayed there for 20 AUD a night, which is really good value for everything the hostel has to offer. Base Embassy is definately a hostel where you can stay for a while!
