Three families stayed one week. First night room 5 had bed bugs, response by management was to blame the guest, a new room had to be asked for - bed bugs were a full blown infestation. No apology or help offered, clothing and luggage needed to be cleaned at own cost or disposed of. On day 6 two wallets went missing from another room - management (Bob) was not interested - police investigated, no outcome. Renovated rooms are comfortable and the location is great, pool and Bbq area is always clean. This is our second stay, this time under mew management. Suggest Bob undertakes PR training specifically for dealing with serious health and safety issues.

Room Tip: Renovated room by poolside

We had a 2 bedroom apt. The staff were pretty nice. And the decor the was also reasonable, but dated.
The shower leaked water, everywhere.
The dryer didn't work.
The dishwasher was out of order.
The aircon didn't work.
The staff texted us to see what time we were arriving and after giving them a time indication they still weren't ready when we wanted to check in. The text seemed pointless.
There were so many rules for the conditions of stay, which i understand there is more in a serviced apt (things that one needs to do instead of the staff) but for what we got, i felt as though all the rules were a bit rich.

My husband, 4yr old daughter and I stayed in a ground floor superior two bedroom appt for 7 nights. Although the website states the the appt is recently renovated, it is quite rough in areas and definitely not as big as it looks on the website.

Pros- Price; easy check in; nice bathroom and kitchen; washer and dryer in room; great outlook onto the pool/gardens; only 10 min walk to the esplanade, 15 to the night markets; although its close to the heart of the cbd there was little noise.
Cons- (mostly just niggly little things!) No extra bed pillows (hubby and I both like 2 pillows!); shower pressure not great; we didn't use the dishwasher as when we opened it the smell was pretty bad; plates/cutlery/cups all needed washing again as they wern't clean, vacuum cleaner supplied didn't suck, just pushed dirt around.

I can't comment on tour booking etc as my father in law is a local and did all that for us, but overall I would definitely recommend Reef Gateway as a base for a Cairns holiday. The place had everything we needed and, really, you don't go on holiday just to stay in your room so some small issues can be overlooked.

Room Tip: Bottom floor rooms have patios

We've been coming back to the Reef Gateway Apartments for some years now, and it's not hard to fathom why. For starters they're ideally located, directly opposite the brand new Cairns Hospital and about 60 metres from the diagonally opposite Pig & Whistle Tavern and just up the road from another restaurant serving basically Indonesian cuisine. Then again, it's about a five minute stroll to the northern part6 of the waterfrontage Esplanade with great walks and sea-and-mountain views that attract so many happy tourists, not just joggers and outdoor fitness freaks, but families, kids in strollers and people taking advantage of the ginormous free open-air swimming lagoon opposite all the restaurants. There are 24 units on three levels, some two bedroom, some one bedroom, plus a decent-sized swimming pool with a sun-shade within the grounds also boasting a sizeable terracotta-tiled gazebo and (free) barbecue with table and chairs. The grounds are a haven for many happily-singing birds, including willy-wagtails, and the bus stops are 20 metres away. Bob Logan, your resident manager, is a super-friendly and oh-so-helpful guide who keeps the place immaculately presented and clean, and can also arrange all your tours. Our two bedroom unit boasted three air-conditioners, a state-of-the-art bathroom, modern furniture, decent balcony with table and four chairs, washing machine and dryer, and television. It overlooked the pool and was in its own right a restful place to while away those spare holiday hours. We can't speak too highly of it, nor will you once you've experienced its proximity to everything that Cairns has to offer!

Room Tip: We recommend you ask for a unit that overlooks the pool.
