“Great View and a very comfy King Size Bed”
Reviewed 22 September 2010

We were lucky with the rate for this hotel thru WOTIF mystery hotel and saved and bundle with an Executive room on the Top Floor.

The room had been renovated and was very modern with one of best and comfy King Size Bed I have ever slept in at a Hotel. The staff very friendly and attentive. We had a great view over a Huge Park and towards the City .

Sure its a little out if the Centre of the CBD , however the Free Tram five minute walk away was no trouble and Adelaide City is very easy to get around . Even if you wanted to jump on the Free City Circle Bus.

What did impress me about the Hotel room was the enviro measures they have taken with the lights. A huge bath and a great shower and even believe it or not a toilet seat that almost closes on it own.

All in all a very comfy hotel with great staff service.

Dear Rickmatt

Thankyou for choosing to stay at Grand Chifley Adelaide recently and taking the time to write a review. I am pleased that you enjoyed your stay.

The Executive Rooms we also consider to be greatvalue for money and when offered through channels such as mystery rooms etc a very pleasant surprise. These rooms were completely refurbished including bedding, bathrooms, floor coverings, televisions and energy efficiences as part of our hotel upgrade which was completed in early 2009.

As you and many others have mentioned, the free city transport is a great way to see our beautiful city and very convenient.

I have shared your comments with the hotel management and team and we look forward to welcoming you back when next you stay.

Kind Regards

We stayed here for 5 nights and feel quite mixed about this hotel. The location is very convenient, and it's not hard to drive anywhere (like much of Adelaide) from the hotel. The staff are (in the main, with only a couple of exceptions) very friendly, professional and customer-oriented. Breakfast is expensive (if it's not included in your rate or you get a special offer, I'd strongly advise you to go elsewhere), but it is of good quality and in quite nice surroundings.

In terms of facilities, Wi-fi is available, but was expensive and you are given limitations on how much you can download. The hotel has a carpark, which is free, but it fills up very quickly and in the early evenings you might be unlucky enough not to find a space. Those with big cars will find it challenging to park as the spaces are tight.

The rooms are OK. but a mix of old and recently refurbished (i.e. very old table and chairs; new bed and carpet) but the bathrooms are very nice. We had a balcony, but as it was winter didn't go out onto it (the pigeons liked to sit on it though). Air conditioning/heating is through an old-style unit on the wall that makes a hell of a racket - in the end we decided that we would rather freeze than be deafened.

But our biggest problem was in the absolute lack of any soundproofing whatsoever. Floors are so thin you can hear the people upstairs moving around. If you have a room with a connecting door, you will hear everything (and I mean everything) your neighbours do.

But the real issue is with wardrobe doors. Sounds surreal, but it will drive you mad. The wardrobes have large sliding doors (the minibar, kettle and safe are also in the wardrobe) and so you have to open/close the doors frequently. Unfortunately, there are no rubber 'stoppers' on the doors so they slam very loudly against the side of the wardrobe and each other. With the lack of soundproofing between rooms, the sound carried marvellously. We constantly had this thumping from the rooms around us and above us all hours of the day and night (we nicknamed it the "Wardrobe Symphony") and in the end bought some ear plugs in order to sleep through the night.

If only the hotel would buy some small adhesive rubber pads and fit them to all the doors! But in general an OK hotel, which much to commend it.

Dear London_2wn

Thankyou for choosing to stay at the Grand Chifley Adelaide and taking the time to give us your valued feedback. I am pleased you enjoyed the majority of your stay.

I have asked our Maintenance and Housekeeping teams to conduct an audit of the airconditioning units throughout the hotel as the noise level certainly should not be intrusive. As well as the carparking surrounding the property, additional spaces are available in the Country Comfort Motel complex adjoining the Grand Chifley which we also manage.

Your suggestion regarding the stoppers/rubbers for the wardrobe doors is greatly appreciated and I have passed this along to our Maintenance manager to investigate installation so that we can disband the symphony.

Breakfast pricing is constantly being monitored to ensure value and competitevness with other hotels and we also offer a range of discounted options when making bookings over the internet and on check-in.

As youmentioned Adelaide is a lovely city and easy to get around, we think we are indeed fortunate in our CBD fringe location overlooking the picturesque South Parklands. The FREE city tram, with a stop just 200m from our property, is another convenient mode of transport which takes people to Rundle Mall, Victoria Square and the North Terrace precincts.

I look forward to welcoming you back to our hotel should you again travel to Adelaide.

Kind Regards

Stayed one night in July, in a queen bed room on fourth floor.

Positives:

Friendly staff.
Comfortable bed.
Room moved from a 2x double bed to a 1x queen, which suited me well.

Negatives:

Really loud and constant pigeon sounds - made it hard to sleep.
School next door was pretty noisy when I arrived, but no problems outside school hours.
Room service was expensive and pretty poor standard. A later night snack, but not that good.
TV reception was a bit patchy.
Corridors on level four really smelt.

Overall, needs some more renovation, but good for the price ($100) - even though I wouldn't consider it 4 1/2 stars.

Dear Traveloctopus

Thankyou for choosing to stay at Grand Chifley Adelaide recently and for providing such valuable feedback.

I have passed on your comments to our staff whom we consider to be a great assett.

We are currently working with the local authorities and a bird control company to humanely deal with the pigeon problem being experienced and which has been somewhat reduced over the last months.

I have also passed on your comment regarding Room Service to our Executive Chef. We regularly update the menu items and appreciate this feedback.

The TV reception issue which you mention has also been passed onto our Maintenance team to investigate and correct. A review of our logs over the last months has not revealed this to be a known problem and I apologise for any inconvenience you may have experienced.

I look forward to welcoming you back to our hotel in the future and again thankyou for the feedback

Kind Regards

Stayed for one night. Location and facilities are excellent considering the very reasonable rate. The room was spacious and very clean. View from our room was uninspiring but that's hardly an issue - most rooms would face the park opposite and they would have nice views!. The most impressive aspect of all for us were the wonderful staff at reception; friendly, accommodating and cheerful. I could not be more appreciate of their efforts and assistance. Also, the buffet breakfast was excellent value at $10pp.

Dear Gregory

Thankyou for choosing to stay with Grand Chifley Adelaide and taking the time to write a review. I am pleased you enjoyed your stay.

We also recognise that our staff are our greatest assett and I will be sure to pass on your valued feedback and compliments to them. The $10 breakfast special is available during the month of August for all internet bookings and is also offered on check-in over weekend stays - we think its a great way to start your day and certainly one of the most affordable breakfast options in Adelaide! Did you try the self serve pancake machine? Simply Scrumptious.

We look forward to welcoming you back to our hotel in future.

The "Grand Chifley" ain't so grand. It supposedly underwent a total makeover just a year ago and there's a fancy brass plaque in the lobby to attest to the claim. By "total" they mean the lobby and restaurant, and new elevators. After you step off the elevators it's all downhill.
First you are struck by the musty old smell in the corridors, the new carpet couldn't mask it. The old door on your room is a hint as to what to expect inside. Yep, 1970s furnishings in all their faded glory with the "fridge/bar" stuck inside the closet. OK, so they retiled the bathroom with a stylish new toilet, but they couldn't spring for a new bathtub so they painted it instead (the paint is now peeling off), The carpet had be the worst installation job I've ever seen... huge buckles everywhere, a serious threat to trip over in the middle of the night. If you can prey the old door open onto the tiny balcony you'll share it with a rusty old heat pump evaporator which one can only assume is the hotel's version of outdoor furniture.
On the morning we checked out there was no hot water. When mentioning it to the desk clerk we received a "we'll check into it" response followed by "and you owe us $1.50 for the phone call."
The hotel is a blight on what is otherwise a very nice neighborhood
