After 7 weeks of travelling in Australia and New Zealand we spent a night in the multicultural village of Maketu Beach, about an hour's drive north of Rotorua. Tricia welcomed us to the Blue Tides B&B by offering us tea and homemade shortbreads on the balcony overlooking the ocean. The home looks down on the inlet of the river that empties into the Bay of Plenty. Mount Maunganui rises in front of us as we sit and watch the local children swimming on the beach. Tricia made reservations for dinner for us at the local restaurant just down the road which was right on the water. Breakfast was set on white linen tablecloth in the dining room. We started with homemade museli with passion fruit and stewed Granny Smith apples, OJ and tea or coffee. There was homemade kiwi and ginger jam or marmalade on the table, ready for the toast Tricia brought in. The hot breakfast was eggs, bacon and cooked cherry tomatoes. It was all wonderful. The two other couples staying at the B&B were great company and Tricia made us feel right at home. If you are interested in Maori history ask Tricia for more information. It was nicely appointed and great accomodation. A real treat for a weary traveller.
