I think some reviewers of this hotel are unduly harsh. Ok, so The Surrey isn't an up-to-the-moment minimalist modern hotel but then it doesn't pretend to be. I chose this hotel not only because of it's location, but because I LIKE older hotels with some character, rather than pokey small rooms which many newer hotels offer.
I requested a quiet room and was very happy with my apartment style room, at the rear of the complex with a bedroom and separate bed for my friend in the living area. It was very clean and I liked the private courtyard at the rear, adjacent parking and close proximity to the bar and restaurant area and easy walking distance to cafes and a supermarket. The bus stop into town is virtually at the front door. I honestly couldn't fault The Surrey and would definitely stay again.
What was outstanding was, that staff contacted me to say I had left my iPad in the room - arrangements were made for the iPad to be couriered on to accommodation I was staying at a few days later. This was excellent customer service, above and beyond and very much appreciated by me. I found all the staff very pleasant, professional and helpful.
The hotel is an overnight stop for Asian bus trips and it wouldn't be used by them if it didn't tick the right boxes.More
