I have a new found love.. S.U.P!!
I was really nervous when we were getting geared up ready for a guided tour up Hamurana Springs. With our practice in Lake Rotorua, the waves were making it a tad hard for me to get confident and stand up on the board.. I decided to stay on my knees for a wee wile, just so I could learn to steer and stop first. As we started to head towards the mouth of the springs, I started to get a little confident and stood up, only to see a big bridge! Kneeling down on the board going through the bridge was so quiet and almost eerie. The water was so clear and magnificent. Glistening blue water, beautiful green water plants and tiny little springs in the sand. We came up to another bridge, Buba explains for this one, we lie flat on our tummy’s, and use our hands to paddle, also pushing off the bridge. Success! We then weaved through trees and shrubs, admiring the incredible nature that surrounds the spring’s edge. I will admit, I did get stuck on a number of weed bergs (like ice bergs but made of water weeds) that nearly had me flying into the icy cold water. The spring was amazing, producing 4million litres of water every hour. The fresh water is sourced all the way from the Mamukus trickling down to Hamurana.
I had so much fun on the paddleboard tour, It has me contemplating buying one! It is exercise made fun, beautiful and a wonderful scenic way to spend the morning or afternoon!!
