“An Emotional Experience”
Reviewed 23 March 2012

We only had a short time to visit this museum but what we did see was impressive. Of particular interest is the section on the Earthquake that so tragically effected Christ Church. It is a very emotion experience to see much of the material on hand.

“Great exhibition about the recent earthquakes”
Reviewed 21 March 2012

We're not really museum people and initially I wasn't particularly interested in going to this one but then we came across the exhibition about the recent earthquakes and that was absolutely fascinating. It was daunting to hear that there have been approx 10,000 aftershocks and I can understand why people are keeping a close eye on what's happening beneath the earth. Some of the footage was harrowing to see and hear but it was interesting to learn about things like the symbols put on buildings and the plans for rebuilding.

It was the last day of a live monarch butterfly exhibition too and we were able to join hordes of little people admiring the beautiful insects. A lovely bonus.

“sensitive coverage of the earthquake”
Reviewed 21 March 2012

This museum is full of interesting artefacts, but the bit that touched us the most was the coverage of the earthquakes that devastated Christchurch in the last couple of years. The video clips of people speaking about their experiences was particularly moving and helped us to understand how this brave community had been affected. We also came away understanding far more about how the damage had been caused. Elsewhere is the museum there is a penny farthing bike that you can sit on (probably for children really but I had a go anyway!) and a realistic street of old shops. It is next to the Botanical Gardens and well worth a visit.

“A lovely way to spend a couple of hours”
Reviewed 20 March 2012

This place is amazing. It's really cheap (donation only) and they change the displays regularly. I was there a couple of months ago to see the best of the World of Wearable Art costumes.

“Very interesting museum”
Reviewed 19 March 2012

Excellent displays of Maori artefacts; and a fascinating display on the recent earthquakes and the plans for the city's re-growth.

Unfortunately the service in the cafeteria is useless. They'd forgotten our order and we had to chase it up a couple of times. We noticed other people left sitting about for ages. If you want something available at the counter there and then fine, if you order and sit-down and wait, prepare to be patient.
