First the pluses: The Red Tussock is only a short walk to the center of town, stores, restaurants and Fiordlands park headquarters. The person at the desk was very friendly and helpful, and the room was very clean and airy. They are adding a new building with a number of rooms at the back, but construction noise was very minimal.

Now the bad... We were "upgraded" to a two bedroom suite, even though there were only two of us, and warned that we might have noise from the upper unit. We did, but that wasn't really the problem. The second, smaller bedroom had an open electrical panel on the wall, which would make it really unacceptable for families. That room also had a incomplete drywall patch right next to the bed (drywall, but no tape or paint on it).

There was nowhere to plug anything in in the bathroom, so I had to dry my hair in the kitchen. This meant craning my head around the fridge to see a tiny slice of the mirror on the wall behind it.

The overall décor...well, that needed an update forty years ago. It was bleak.

It's great that they are adding rooms, but if you stay here, ask to look at the one you will be given first!

Room Tip: Check the room first!

Id like to reply to these comments on the room as first of all I always tell people this is our budget room so no-one is upgraded to this room this is a standby room if required to be used due to the high season here in Te Anau and accommodation shortage that we have opened this room up to give guests a bed for the night and sell it at a budget price or reduce the price of the room due to its faults and floors but it is clean, comortable and warm if your desperate for a place. Yes we are building another 8 new units and very soon this room that the guests are commenting about will be taken away from anyone staying in it. We took over this motel in July and then in high season we had a pipe burst in this room and this is the reason for the patch on the wall as we have been unable to get the room decorated since and when it is decorated it will be the whole room not just the patch. All my 2 Bedroom apartments in the old part of the Motel are advertised as RETRO so people know what they are getting. There are plugs in all bedrooms or else there would be no place to plug in the electric blankets so they are down low and perhaps harder to find.
No one needs to worry about getting this room as about end of March this room will not be used for guests any longer.
Thank you for your stay with us but perhaps next time dont come over the highest part of the season or make bookings earlier to get a better choice of apartments.

The host running this motel is fabulous. Another motel mucked up our booking and we had nowhere to stay for two nights. We rang every motel in TeAnau and the only one who helped us was this lady. She immediately found us a holiday home to rent at no extra cost and looked after us really well once we got there. Couldn't recommend her more highly as a host and for her great customer service.

Thank you for your great review and I have tried very hard over our very busy summer season to help guests in our town to find accommodation as it can be very stressful and when you have friend whom have holiday house they let us use to help stranded people out its a great relief to most people to have a bed to sleep in. You are very welcome

Te Anau is always full, so I was pleased when Irene was able to fit us in for an extra night. She was extremely good at recommending and booking tours.
The unit comprised of, Lounge with double bed and bedroom with two singles. Rooms good size.
Lounge had a small table four chairs, plus two armchairs.Cooking facilities. Bathroom with bath.
Wifi ok. Walking distance to town. Price OK considering the area.
I would recommend this place.

Great review and nice when guest leave great comments for other people to read on the place makes a huge difference and I would say you stayed in Apartment No 7 we try to make it so people have what they require for their stay like even a table and chairs as we have stayed at Motels & Hotel's that don't have that so I understand. Te Anau is only a small township but it has everything most people need for there stay here and just about the whole town is within 10min walk for the town centre. High Summer yes you need to have made booking for else you will not get a bed to sleep in due to the amount of people whom come in Peak season is amazing where we like it with snow on the mountains makes for great photo's and less people everywhere yes it colder but just add another layer of clothing.
Bus tour is the best way to see Milford Sound I do not understand why people drive to save a few dollars on a once in a life time experience you learn so much more about the place from the local drivers from Te Anau they are just amazing an worth every cent.

We stayed 2 nights and for price and location we were very pleased. Especially as we had just paid Queenstown prices recently. Clean and roomy with lovely big windows. Easy access to all you need in Te Anau.

Yes we know what you mean about Queenstown prices but thats what you get if you want to stay there we feel its over rated but guess its something every tourist must do and often afterwards wonder why!! Queenstown is just eats money really all year round it is so busy Summer and Winter so not sure why their high prices.
We want guest to come to Te Anau and enjoy the area and want to return after having a great experience in a nice quiet restful place at good prices.
