Attraction details
Owner description: Enjoy the atmosphere of an original shearing shed. The show consists of hand feeding our drysdale Ram ??? Ram-Man??? (who is very photogenic) watching a sheep being shorn, the wool being sorted and pressed. This is followed by a general discussion giving information about sheep shearing, sheep breeds and wool types. Hold a shearing hand piece, old blades shears and Ram horns. During spring you can touch, hold and feed a lamb. Time 30 minutes.

This is such a fun little show! The owner of this small sheep farm in New Zealand spreads out his sheep shearing so he can sheer two a day for the tourists all year long.

It is a very genuine experience as the owner has basically just opened up his farm yard to visitors, so it is a nice break from the usual, highly-polished tourist attractions. You get to bottle feed and hold a lamb, then learn a bit about sheep farming as you watch a sheep get sheared.

The only caution is that the animals in the show are livestock and not pets, so they have to be wrestled a bit and held down while they are sheared. This is obviously done in a way that is safe and does not harm the animal, but if you are expecting it to look like your pet dog at the groomers, you should be prepared for something a little rougher as this is a working farm.

The host is a very nice man and he does a really good job of telling people about his industry. The show is about 20 minutes long and cost us $12 each.

If you are in the area and are curious about all the sheep farms you drive by in New Zealand, this is a must see that is very worth it!

As a first time visitor to NZ and someone who knows very little about any type of farming, I had so many questions about sheep when in this country full of them. Yet, shockingly, there seem to be virtually no opportunities for tourists to interact with sheep, sheep farmers, etc. We stumbled across the Point Sheep Shearing Show on our visit to Kaikoura and couldn’t resist. For a small price, we got to watch a sheep be sheared, feed a baby lamb, feed a giant ram, play with a sheep dog, take a ridiculously hilarious photo with ram horns and wool on my head, and ask all the questions I had been wondering about while driving around the countryside, like do lambs have tails. Well worth it.

What a great little show, Peter has got this down to a tee!

Do yourself favour and see it if passing through Kaikoura. We also fed a 2 day old lamb and petted some 3 month old lambs too. Just great!

Host was friendly. Casual atmosphere. Host presented information in a very interesting way, explained the sheep industry, gave the kids small samples, got to try lanolin lotion, bottle fed lambs, pic opportunities. Fun for kids and adults.

We turned up on the off chance of the late afternoon show but unfortunately it had been cancelled for a last minute emergency - however the owners were very nice to show us around, give the kids some of the wool sheared earlier in the day and show the sheep in the field which came up and nibbled from their hands - even this was worth the visit
