This was our 3rd visit to El Portillo having liked it so much on our two previous occasions. We were not disappointed this time despite hurricane IRMA's best efforts to spoil the holiday. We were due to be on the outer edges of the hurricane so we were all evacuated in coaches to the Bahia Principe complex in Punta Cana for safety. This was a huge site comprising of 5 hotels. We stayed there for 5 days before being bused back to El Portillo after the hurricane had past by. The complex at Punta Cana was fine but far too big for us with need to catch trolley buses to reach the beach the reception area and dining rooms we were very well taken care of safety being their priority. On returning to El Portillo we were given a tremendous welcome by all the staff. After that we continued our holiday as normal. The staff must have worked so hard everything was pristine after the clean up. As usual the food in the main buffet was excellent with plenty of choice and themed nights to suit all tastes. The staff were fantastic as usual very friendly, helpful and accommodating. We love it there and have already booked for next year. The village of Las Terranas is well worth a visit with lots of lovely bars. Taxis wait just outside the front gate for the price of $10 eachway.

I an being honest, this resort is really nice and I recommend it!! The only reason why I saying it is not a 5* is because the rooms are small, a little old looking and the bathroom very small. (Ex: when you leave the bathroom door open, you can't get in the shower...).

But having saying this, the food is excellent at the buffet. The lobby area is really classy. The bars offers good selection (service a little slow at the lobby bar). The gardens are beautiful. There is a disco. The overall maintenance of the facilities is excellent.

Hot point, the beach is wonderful. If you are a diver, the coral is all dead in front of the hotel (be aware of this) but there is still a lot of fish all colors close to the shore.

The pool is miniature and no bar in the pool (you must know this if you have children).

I would rate this resort 4*. We had a wonderful time there as a group but unfortunately we had to interrupt our stay due to the Hurricane Maria. I would return there because the price is affordable and you get a lot for the price.

I recommend it !

Room Tip: If you have kids they offer rooms with a connecting door.

Well this is one review that is going to read a little differently by virtue of having experienced not one, but two hurricanes during the course of our holiday!
We booked a three week stay at Grand Bahia Principe El Portillo to celebrate our 30th Wedding Anniversary and it was the first time we have ever returned to the same place for a second time. Our daughter, travelling alone under separate booking, was joining us for the latter two weeks and I had emailed ahead to request that we were allocated quiet rooms close together, at the front of the resort nearest to beach and lobby. We arrived for our first week to a great location in block 6 and enjoyed two gloriously chilled days of perfect conditions. The hotel had advised guests that it was currently monitoring a tropical storm and was quietly going about the business of preparing for some potentially rough weather but we were advised that the rooms were shelter-safe and there was no sense of urgency or impending doom. Well.... two days later... and us still being on "English time... awoke very early and went for breakfast at 7am. Thought it was quiet but no more than that. Headed back to room, changed into swimwear, put on suncream and headed to the beach. Not a soul on the beach but - (first clue!) - not a sniff of a Sunbed either. How strange! Then someone came running to us and said "you no knooooow? - (know what??) - you GOooo - go Nooooooow! Busses come!" We were to be evacuated en masse at 11.45 and had to check out.
Back to room, packed, back to lobby (also packed!!) and swiftly on a coach to Punta Cana for SIX hours. Driver got completely lost, did a thirty point turn in the middle of a duel carriageway and we finally arrived, at 7pm at the lobby of Grand Bahia Fantasia just as the rain started to lash it down. We had missed lunch in the suddenness of it all and were therefore tired, hungry and in sweaty anticipation of dinner. But nope! We were assigned to rooms and swiftly put on room curfew with the assurance that food was waiting for us in our room.
This is my one slight gripe as surely a five star hotel with ample time to prepare for a sudden influx of evacuees can do better than a dry cheese sandwich?! There was fruit - most of it tropical and requiring utensils of some sort to get into it (which we didn't have), a banana (which was so black that had it lingered in the fruit bowl at home would have been binned), one filter sachet of coffee and no creamer. We stayed in said room until the following evening - but safe, working wifi, intermittent tv signal, nothing to worry about. We stayed at Fantasia for the next five days.
Now then .... I should really "review" Fantasia separately but I won't dwell too much. Suffice to say this is actually one of SEVEN Bahia hotels making up one enormous complex of differently themed hotels and most definitely NOT our thing. Fantasia is predominantly for families with young children and very Disneyesque. We hated it! But...... to be fair, it gave access to the facilities of ALL the hotels and - once we had our bearings - we found our preferred surrounds, quieter spots and aesthetics. The beach though was something else and a world away from the undeveloped, uncrowded peace of Samana as is our preference. We stayed mostly at the Esmeralda pool.
By this time of course we are anxious about the impending arrival of our daughter. Where to?.... El Portillo is closed and she has not been notified of this, in advance, by the tour operator in England. We contact her - and Thomson - to find out exactly where our daughter would be accommodated but we both are told they are not aware of any problems with the resort (are you kidding?! - it's all over the news)
Clearly we are NOT happy with this at all as it would appear they are more concerned with protecting their booking than giving accurate information to customers. And we still do not know where our daughter will be or for how long.
Tried everything, including Bahia staff at Fantasia, to find out if or when we might go back to El Portillo so that, - if not - we might make some contingencies for our daughters relocation. As I kept trying to explain .... two bookings but ONE family and a young, single female travelling alone at that; it simply wasn't acceptable to us to have her located someplace separate to us.
Thank god for Dionisio! - not a drink but a man! A very helpful man in a sea of couldn't-give-a-toss! He was Management at Esmeralda and could see our anxiety... ASKED what was the problem, TOOK time to understand it and GAVE time to finding information for us. He made numerous phone calls, gave us his own direct number and through him, his help, his kindness - managed to find out more information than the reps appeared to know. We went back to El Portillo five days later where we finally reunited with our daughter who had spent two days on her own in San Juan. But at least, thanks to him, we knew!
No ones fault. Hurricane by -product. But ....the non-existent information, clarity, reassurance or assistance from the tour operator wasn't good at all.
As for Fantasia..... that whole complex.... wow! Mind boggling. Hated it at first but softened as - if you were travelling, say as a large, mixed age group with multiple needs and holiday expectations - then this concept does offer something to suit everyone once you've found your own particular groove.
Back to El Portillo.... where we were once again checked in to adjacent rooms, enjoyed a couple of a la cartes and literally just unpacked when.... here we go again!
Bye bye Irma, hello Maria!
Poor staff had only just cleaned up and made good from the first storm!
This time we didn't evacuate but instead were moved to mid-floor, interconnecting rooms further back of the resort. And sat tight whilst all was boarded up around us.
But what a difference!
El Portillo ... what can I say except you did a remarkable job! No stress or drama, just diligent in preparing, drilled in making safe and faultless in continuing "as normal" so far as circumstances allowed. We did have 24 hour room curfew but wifi was kindly extended to all rooms, a phone call to room notified us that the buffet would be open for two hours... this, in the tail end of a hurricane which had taken roof tiles off, dropped a foot of water, felled trees and filled swimming pools with debris! Alas the beachside snack bar is no more! (Though rest assured it was being rebuilt as we left!) Still they fed, watered, and entertained us.
The normally sedate El Portillo turned impromptu house party for one night only as people, just off room curfew, danced and Conga'd at the lobby bar. Two days later and all was pretty much back to normal. Food was awesome throughout and though there are (a very few!) sniffy reviews about poor service and staff attitudes, I would very much want to say that you reap as you sow. We had exemplary service and unequivocal loveliness from everyone we met. Special mention of Aridenis in buffet management for looking after us so well, Yordelisa who was unbelievably warm and natural, Adrien on reception just because he would brighten anyone's day! The staff are GREAT and - seriously - if you aren't happy here, stay at home!
Granted - if you want shopping, sightseeing, wild excursions, a big entertainment scene - this is not the place for you! But if, like us, you want an "easy", personal, chillout place with exemplary standards of cleanliness and consistently good food on a truly spectacular and undeveloped beach - this is very hard to knock.
I always think that perhaps the truest measure of anything - be it person or place - is in adverse conditions. El Portillo did a phenomenal job. We had a fantastic time and - yes - we will be back because you feel like family now.
On a last note....(finally... sorry!) .... I did hear a few miserly grumbles ...that an a la carte wasn't open or the room had leaked or a drain had blocked, or whatever. Come on people, get a grip! YOU have had the very great privilege of safe haven, good food and five star hospitality in extreme conditions within which others undoubtedly have lost homes, roofs, livelihoods.
For this reason we bought no holiday souvenirs but instead frittered our cash away..tipped staff WELL, gave to vendors on the beach etc. Please ...do the same and give the time of day to others who are simply trying to make a living. (Thumbs up to our amigo, Nelson 55 and his son Rodalpho 58)
Thank you to everyone at El Portillo for taking such good care of us.

My husband and I, and our two little ones stayed at the Grand Bahia Principe El Portillo from Aug26-Sep2, 2017, for a friend's wedding. We had a wonderful time and are hoping to go back again soon!
I was very nervous about the room size. We travel with a lot of stuff for the two year old, and my husband takes up a lot of space with his 6'2" stature. And I knew we would be spending a lot of time in the room for naps and down time. I loved our room. We were in room 26101, I think it was a junior suite. More than enough space in the room and bathroom. Being on the ground floor was great because of the stroller. There are no elevators so I wouldn't have been happy carrying the stroller up and down the stairs everyday.
The food exceeded my expectations. We just stuck to the buffet and snack bar with the kids. Everything was so yummy. My mouth is watering thinking about it. Everyday was different and lots of variety. My favourite though was just all the fresh fruits. I think we ate an equivalent of 10 mangos every day. My husband almost always has stomach issues when travelling but not at all here!
We spent most of our time by the pool and splash pad. I was worried about getting chairs, but we never had a problem. The kids LOVED the splash pad. It is AWESOME. Unfortunately the splash pad was not close to the pool or buffet. So we would just hop onto a trolley to take us around, it was just a bit cumbersome with the stroller.
The only thing that was a pain was that the free internet was only in the lobby.
Also, lots of mosquitos...bring repellant!
