We have been on three trips in the Sahara Desert, out of Djanet in Algeria. All have been amazing. The first trip was up into the Tassili N'Ajjer Plateau. This is closed now unfortunately. The second and third trips have been to the Tadrart which is a desert
area about 70 kms from Djanet. It is just so beautiful and visually stunning. We go out with Touareg guides, who have a driver, cook and a couple of guides. They are very kind, hospitable and cook 3 delicious meals a day. We have been lucky to go out on each of our trips with Moussa Macher, who was born in the desert and who is a grandson of the famous Touareg guide, Djebrine Machar ag Mohamed, as well as his cousin Moussa who is a superb cook. We chose to sleep under the stars although there is an option of using a tent. The majesty of the scenery is unparalled, it is almost too much to take in. On this trip, we walked about 120 kms so you have plenty of time and space to absorb the beauty of the region. There are also wonderful rock art sites to wonder at. We love the quiet, the peace, the desert, and the stars at night and the chance to experience Touareg desert life. I am just so glad we have had the opportunity to do this. A peak lifetime experience. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

The Desert!

It's an amazing and exciting experience. It's so big and quiet you could here a pin drop.

Try going to Algiers first, the Sheraton or Hilton are good locations to start. Plan carefully your journey and who you deal with and the quality of the support you will need before venturing South.

The desert is a remote and hostile environment that takes no prisoners so planning is extremely important and essential piece before venturing out.

Life support and communications are fundamental to those who have done such a trip.

Try contacting Stirling Facilities Management limited in UK or the RedMed Group in Algeria who specialise in desert support and FM.

Enjoy the desert it's a fascinating and one off experience. Remember the 7P's

Driving by night, be carrefull with diving in the sand. The air is pure and you can see a lot of stars you can't see in Europe.
Driving by day, the heat make you see caravans of camels or trees.
I cross north to south and south to north by hitchicking with some madness.
You have to stop to Tamanrasset and explore around in the mountains. Meeting people is very easy and interesting. LA SOURCE : water with natural gaz.
